what aboout saad janjua? took fifty wickets in the half a season we had him at central avenue. Played pakistan A side as well I seem to remember.

I was also wondering about SBN. why do players of such good quality play for sides that are obviously below their level? surley if they are really serious about their game and succeeding at the highest level then they would play in the best standard possible. Im sure it happens with a lot of players. Is it just a case of whoever puts in the highest bid gets the player no matter of the standard?

I think its a case of he plays his serious cricket back home.
when in england, he would just play for a combination of whoever he enjoys playing for/whoever gives him the most money.

Good players there Percy, who was the lad from Queensland you had opening the bowling, i think he went off the rails a bit when he went home.

Paul Spence - very good player.  Remember one night at nets him and his mate from Essex (Darren Cousins) I think, were pounding in off full runs bowling to who ever dare stand at the other end.  Very nice to watch not so much to face.

Now we're talking, Ratty.  Faced him at Cutthorpe under gloomy conditions and a helful wicket.  There wasn't a man in front of square.  He got it through.

I wish they still had fights in this game so I could bitch-slap Wayne.

remember that day, about seven slips and not one who could catch! I was very glad i was on saad's side that day, especially with the light and the track. you guys still managed to knock our score off though. he was quick enough in the nets in bright sunshine coming in off 5 yards.

Remember it well.  Saw him and Gale off then gave my wicket away.  Think I got about 20 batting 3.  Kev Leatherday refused to face him and said "Someone will die today"

I play at pilsley , if you read 'WHY PLAY IN DIV 2 ' an old thread on 'outlawed', this may help and answer you're questions ( white-knight and myself responding to similar questions).

in answer to the above , SBN had never played any ' league cricket ' in this country  prior to him signing for Pilsley CC ,some 5 years ago now.
Saeed was our first overseas player and the CLUB took a gamble .
Having checked his scores on the 'net / www' in his domestic season prior to him signing and along with advice , i believe from other local clubs with an 'overseas' , also the agent , the signing was made. The 'gamble' paid off you could say !!

Loyalty on Saeeds side has been a major factor since , along with the atmosphere at the club.
It can't be for the money , he's turned down better offers from the 'BIGGER CLUBS', not just in this area .
For some reason he's stayed loyal to the CLUB,  its players and  members  who backed him originally, rewarding us and helping  us to progress both on and especially off the field.
The CLUB has also stayed loyal to Saeed.

undecidedAnyone who is interested in joining / playing for the club at the beautiful Barlow Hill !! Grin  ,with it's fantastic views Shocked  Roll Eyes following its move to the dccl is most welcome.

Practice at Cricketal mondays 7- 8pm  and kids coaching tuesday and wednesdays at pilsley school.
Send a PM to myself or White _ knight , if  you or your kids are looking for a new club Wink

I remember shivering up at Pilsley in the hot Summer of 1967 when I played at Hasland, at least it was hot before we made our way to the exposed plateau that is Pilsley CC.
Enjoyed the game, but it was bl00dy cold out there.

Played against both Pilsley and Bolsover last year.  Both overseas players were great playes and really helpful afterwards when asking them for advice.

Bolsover - Good luck in Div 1
Pilsley - God luck in the DCCL.

Thanks for your thoughts. Not sure who you are but must have played against you last season.

SBN and Usman are very good players, and it would be interesting to see them both in div 1.  SBN is a genuine guy who is looked after at Pilsley, clearly enjoys it and as a result is loyal. Nothing wrong with that, surely its what being a professional is all about. He plays a very high standard in Pakistan so he can't be accused of not being ambitious either. To top it all he is a real quality batsman.

Usman will simply get better and better, and I predict if he continues to develop he could also be pushing for higher honours in 2-3 years in Pakistan. I wish him well for next season.

Its probably unfair to compare other professionals, although I have played against some excellent players. Asad Butt is one who certainly fits into that category, and Tariq of course is Mr. Consistency, a real team player, top batsman and a nicer guy you would be hard pressed to find. (better be careful or a certain person in Clay Cross will be telling me he has been round to Lahore for tea with him and that Tariq has confessed how much he hates Bolsover - still caues an avalanche of amusement at Bolsover that one - By the way how you keeping Blademan???)

Another player who earned huge respect when he played for Bolsover is Zahid. Now that boy could destroy an attack in 5 overs. Now to throw another name into the hat consider Chris Marples at Cutthorpe amazed nobody has mentioned him. Excellent bat and very destructive (ooops my solicitor is on the phone pointing out Chris doesn't fit into this category - sorry - now I know why nobody has mentioned him). Wondered why the list was so short! Better go before I get into trouble

Saeed and Usman are both great players and qulaity blokes to boot

Saeed had a couple of games with us at Spital the first season he was here, couldn't wish for a nicer lad and his batting was simply awesome

Last year was Usman's first time in England and he performed brilliently (especially since he told us he couldn't bowl!!!!!) he was a top bloke and I wish him well for the future

Over the last twenty years i have seen most overseas players in the Bassetlaw and have witnessed the demise of standards as well, i would say div 1 is equivalent to just below 1B of the late 1980's.

The best quick bowler was undoubtedly Iqbal - the fact that we are still talking about him today is testament to that. He was very quick and contrary to some comments on this thread very accurate, bowling the vast majority of balls in the right areas - hitting the stumps.

Most talented batsman - Hudson Trevelyan, at Thoresby early 1990s, complete idiot but in terms of natural talent unsurpassed from what i have seen in the Bassetlaw.

I think in terms of spin bowling Dave French's overall stats will stand up against anyones.

Not too sure about keepers - i suppose the best keepers are the ones that you don't notice too much.

silly point !

your post reflexs your name "silly point"

the only reason standards in the "bassetlaw league" have gone down is because the "bassetlaw league" is not the highest standard people can now play with the introduction of the "premier league".

I've played local cricket for the last 25 years and I've never seen as many promicing youngsters coming through the ranks have have I have at the moment.

most clubs are geared up to encorage the juniors, "clumber, worksop, clowne, blyth, welbeck, all have strong junior links. to name just a few.

and as for the best overseas there's not been many better then sbn and the present day crop.
