Reports in last nights evening post -- regarding Bulwell CC makes sad reading. A few years ago ,I was invited to a special evening at Trent Bridge to mark the centenary of cricket in Nottinghamshire . Only 4 of the original clubs were still in existance --- Bulwell, Eastwood ( formerly eastwood colliery ) unity casuals and one other ( possibly from the Bingham area ) who had announced their closure on the very day . I had the good fortune to enjoy an evening with Mick Newall ,s parents ( representing Unity ) and Dick Bramley and his lovely wife , who were represnting Bulwell. Anyone who has played at Bulwell knew the problems of dog mess on the field and a continuous battle with the local yobs . The club has to battle back at least twice from having travellors aka gypo's , leaving the ground like a rubbish dump . Bulwell always seemed to bounce back, perhaps Dick Bramley and the rest of the club ,have had to fight one battle too many. Over the years Bulwell have produced some excellant local cricketers, top of the list being Mick Overend , -- a player who had many an opportunity to move to any club of his choice . Yet Mick had a loyalty to Bulwell . Clubs like Bulwell are the foundation of the the local leagues . Perhaps their fortunes have been in decline, and perhaps their facilities wern't the greatest, but no-one could deny the work put in by Dick Bramley. His wife's teas were legendary , his laughter could bring a smile to everyone and his cricketing stories were boundless . There must be hundreds of Bulwell youngsters ( and not so young ) who have reaped the benefit of the cricket club . Surely some one in the area could step in, and help the club to keep going. It doesn't matter at the level at which they compete , but it matters that they keep going . It's very difficult to start a club from scratch -- good luck in all your efforts ----- keith longden ex-eastwood town cc
