Bulwell C.C.
« on: Mar 15th, 2006, 12:32pm »

Reports in last nights evening post -- regarding Bulwell CC makes sad reading. A few years ago ,I was invited to a special evening at Trent Bridge to mark the centenary of cricket in Nottinghamshire . Only 4 of the original clubs were still in existance --- Bulwell, Eastwood ( formerly eastwood colliery ) unity casuals and one other ( possibly from the Bingham area ) who had announced their closure on the very day . I had the good fortune to enjoy an evening with Mick Newall ,s parents ( representing Unity ) and Dick Bramley and his lovely wife , who were represnting Bulwell. Anyone who has played at Bulwell knew the problems of dog mess on the field and a continuous battle with the local yobs . The club has to battle back at least twice from having travellors aka gypo's , leaving the ground like a rubbish dump . Bulwell always seemed to bounce back, perhaps Dick Bramley and the rest of the club ,have had to fight one battle too many. Over the years Bulwell have produced some excellant local cricketers, top of the list being Mick Overend , -- a player who had many an opportunity to move to any club of his choice . Yet Mick had a loyalty to Bulwell . Clubs like Bulwell are the foundation of the the local leagues . Perhaps their fortunes have been in decline, and perhaps their facilities wern't the greatest, but no-one could deny the work put in by Dick Bramley. His wife's teas were legendary , his laughter could bring a smile to everyone and his cricketing stories were boundless . There must be hundreds of Bulwell youngsters ( and not so young ) who have reaped the benefit of the cricket club . Surely some one in the area could step in, and help the club to keep going. It doesn't matter at the level at which they compete , but it matters that they keep going . It's very difficult to start a club from scratch -- good luck in all your efforts ----- keith longden ex-eastwood town cc

No involvment at eastwood for nearly 3 years . fester, kerry and james still there.I now enjoy freedom to go wherever and watch whoever I feel like .No doubt will involve Kimberley games at some time . Early season I hope to visit Alfreton , to see how they handle Derbys Prem League --- Langley Mill to see how they fare at Div 3 and Heanor ( same reason )

Dick played a massive role in running the club and has been a massive part of the progression of young cricketers. I certainly owe alot of the talent i have to him as if it wasnt for him, i wouldnt have had the chance to play the game at a young age.
So what was the article about? Im very intreaged ...

Gangster and Chucky playing in the same team !!! Enough to frighten the rotweillers at Bulwell . Although most cricket lovers would love to see Bulwell playing again , I hope that others aren't sitting in the background hoping to use the situation , with one eye on a vacant ground becoming available .

Sad news, enjoyed many great games Papplewick V Bulwell in the late 80's, whilst Dick was running the juniors. Good luck guys.

Always loved facing Mick Overend & Roy Gregory. They had offered advice after virtually every ball, even if you managed to lay the middle of the bat on it, quality cricketers!

very sad news! Got my first ton aginst bulwell. good set of lads.  Just a pity about the mindless idiots that ruin things for others. it wasn't fun dodging the moterbikes and trying to get the ball back when a dog ran off with it.  playing there once play had to stop for half an hour because of someone was flying a kite behined the the bowlers arm! never kown that before!

Dick Bramley can be seen here as a youngster playing for Nottingham City Schools in a schools match at Trent Bridge in 1953.

The photo in the article was submitted by a reader a couple of years ago. If anyone else has any old photos of local cricket, I would be very interested to hear from you.
