Works take the title as League welcomes new applicants

The curtain has recently closed on the 41st season of the Sheaf Sports Yorkshire & Derbyshire Cricket League with Millhouses Works being crowned as Division One champions.

As YDCLnProud states on the forum: "After the very future of our club seemed so bleak at the end of last season, when our 4th title was tempered by the loss of our ground, it was wonderful that we have managed to bounce back stronger both on and off the field and defended our title for the first time in our history."

Works topped the League with 321 points, 19 clear of Parkhead, who in turn were five clear

Millers Sunday side win but fail to secure promotion

Langley Mill’s Sunday side cruised to an easy victory over neighbours Swanwick Hall at Station Road in the final game of their Sunday League campaign. Despite a comfortable seven wicket victory, the Millers failed to get the maximum points needed to guarantee promotion and they must now hope that Anston don’t get 18 points at Shireoaks on Sunday which will give them the runners-up spot.

Swanwick batted first and as in their previous encounter, young Oliver Green was the mainstay of the innings, hitting an unbeaten 52. Jack Pressland contributed 46 and Kyle Green 28 as the visitors racked up 151 for 6 from their 40 overs.

For Langley Mill, Grant Ball picked up 3 for 45 and Dave Farnsworth 3 for 47.
Millers hit top form, but it’s way too late

Langley Mill bounced back to top form at Station Road on Saturday, crushing 10-man Alrewas by 170 runs. Despite getting the maximum 27 points from the game, the Millers go into the final weekend 30 points outside the promotion places with only 54 points to play for.

Skipper Andrew Bailey won the toss for the hosts and elected to bat against an Alrewas team that was a shadow of the side that trounced the Millers back in June.

Openers Aaron Tullett and Paul Bailey blazed away at eight an over putting on 173 for the first wicket before Tullett fell, caught by Ollie Broadway off James Stevenson’s bowling, two short of a deserved century. Tullett’s knock came off 86 balls and included 18 fours and 3 sixes.
Seconds destroy Cutthorpe, but remain in fifth spot

Langley Mill’s second team also faced an opposition team of only ten players when they travelled to Cutthorpe. The Millers readily brushed aside the hosts to remain in fifth spot in Division 6 North.

Batting first, Cutthorpe were skittled out for just 97 in 32.3 overs, thanks mainly to Jay Holmes’ 14 over spell which returned figures of 5 for 30. Rich Davey picked up the other four wickets to fall for just six runs in his 9.3 over spell.

Of the Cutthorpe batsmen, Alex Archer was top scorer with 25 and apart from Archer, only James Linacre (17) and Daniel Nellis (13) reached double figures.

Langley Mill knocked off the modest total in only 14.5 overs for the loss of two wickets.
