Derbyshire born Jane Cassar to tour India Ilkeston Rutland and Nottinghamshire ladies wicket-keeper Jane Cassar has been selected for the England ladies tour of India in January 2002. A right-hand, top order bat, Jane has been England's wicket-keeper since 1992. Jane, who regularly plays in the Derbyshire Premier League, is the most successful women's keeper in the world, having passed the previous world best with her 50th victim against Australia. She has currently taken 78 dismissals. She was born on Christmas Eve 1972 in Ilkeston and is a former Nottinghamshire hockey player, and she still plays for Crimson Ramblers.
Jane was a member of the winning 1993 World Cup team, and she kept wicket in the next two World Cup Tournaments in 1997 and 2000. She also holds a share of the one day record partnerships for England's fourth and fifth wicket scoring an undefeated 131 with Charlotte Edwards in 1997 and an undefeated 188 with Claire Taylor in 2001 Speaking in the Nottingham Evening Post, Jane said: "We weren't sure if the tour was going ahead because of security so it was quite hard to get up for it, but now I'm really looking forward to it." The England squad consists of 14 players, including two of Jane's Nottinghamshire colleagues, Dawn Holden and Kate Lowe. They will play five one-day internationals and one Test match (see full itinerary below). The squad is: Caroline Atkins (Sussex) 3 matches, born 13/01/81 Described by coach John Harmer as "a balanced, competent squad" , the squad includes three new additions to the bowling line-up in off spinner Helen Wardlaw, Yorkshire colleague Laura Spragg, medium pace, and Surrey leg-spinner Sarah Clarke. They will be ably supported by the experience of Clare Taylor and Lucy Pearson. Skipper Clare Connor is reported as describing India as "one of the most exciting places in the world to tour as a cricketer" . She said: "I can't wait to play there again, especially to return as captain, India is an amazing, challenging place and a nation of cricket-lovers". The squad will be without four regulars as Sarah Collyer, Hannah Lloyd, Kathryn Leng and Laura Harper all withdrew due to University exams in January, but far from being despondent about the loss of experienced players, the squad is said to be upbeat.
