Ockbrook declared 2001 champions There has been much debate on the message board recently about whether the Premier League points system should be changed to a simple win or lose format. We examine a couple of suggestions. Spacemonkey's original post "Win, lose or nowt?" was as follows: "Right, I want to know what people want to think about this. Should we carry on playing as we are or change to straight win/lose matches? Do losing draws serve any purpose whatsoever? Or would a different points system encourage teams to attempt to get as many runs as they can regardless of whether they're bowled out or not?" Jonb asked: " Would it be possible to take the league tables from last season and work out new ones based on straight win/lose to see if they would have come out different? Won't prove much but could be interesting!!" Well mate, the only differences are that Ockbrook and Denby swap places as do Wirksworth and Ilkeston. Here is the new table:
Points awarded: win - 3 points, draw - 1 point, lost - 0 points Swilken then added to the debate by asking: "Would the table look different again if you discriminate (by say 2 extra points) between a win batting 1st (5 points) & a win batting 2nd (3 points)?" The answer is very little will change, but what does change is significant. Ockbrook remain as champions, but Denby take the runners-up spot. Wirksworth regain their seventh spot due to Ilkeston not having won batting first and Stainsby relegate Langley Mill by virtue of winning more 5 pointers. Goodbye Millers.
Points awarded: win batting first - 5 points, win batting second - 3 points, draw - 1 point, lost - 0 points Obviously with a win / lose only system, there would not have been so many drawn games, but it is impossible to calculate just how these matches would have gone, so allowing one point for each of these games is the only viable option for the purpose of this exercise. What do you think about spacemonkey and swilken's ideas?
