Local players selected for Under 19 World Cup

Langley Mill and Nottinghamshire's Samit Patel has been selected in the England Under 19s squad to compete in the 2002 ICC Under 19 World Cup starting in New Zealand in January.

The PatelsSamit, who lives in Giltbrook, plays for Langley Mill alongside father Ron. Younger brother Akhil is a promising spinner who was featured on Channel 4's Test Match programme from Trent Bridge last summer.

The squad leaves for Adelaide in late December before travelling on to New Zealand in the New Year. The competition starts on Saturday 19th January, with the final on Saturday 9th February.

The Under 19 World Cup is played every two years with India being the victors in January 2000 when the event was held in Sri Lanka.

When England last won the tournament in 1998, the squad contained four players, Paul Franks, Chris Schofield, Owais Shah and Graeme Swann, who went on to represent England at senior level.

Other familiar faces in the squad are Paul McMahon who plays for Wollaton and Nottinghamshire, Bilal Shafayat, who has turned out for the West Indian Cavaliers and whose brother also played for Langley Mill last season, and Nadeem Malik who is a regular in the Nottinghamshire side.

The full squad is:

  • Nicholas Compton - Middlesex
  • Christopher Gilbert - Yorkshire
  • Kyle Hogg - Lancashire
  • Nadeem Malik - Nottinghamshire
  • Paul McMahon - Nottinghamshire
  • Gordon Muchall - Durham
  • Samit Patel - Nottinghamshire
  • Nicky Peng (captain) - Durham
  • Stephen Pope (wicketkeeper) - Gloucestershire
  • Mark Pettini - Essex
  • Alex Roberts - Yorkshire
  • Bilal Shafayat - Nottinghamshire

The World Cup groups are as follows:

Group A: India, South Africa, Bangladesh, Canada
Group B: Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Namibia
Group C: Pakistan, England , Nepal, Papua New Guinea
Group D: Australia, West Indies, Scotland , Kenya
