The Derbyshire Pyramid - vote due soon
by Alan Rowley, 5th November 2001

The Derbyshire County Cricket League holds it's annual Rules Revision meeting on Monday 12th November 2001 and the main topic on the agenda will be the proposed Derbyshire Pyramid.

The Current Situation

  1. There are 38 counties that make up the England and Wales Cricket Board. 37 of those 38 counties are covered by a total of 24 Premier Leagues (some Premier Leagues cover more than one county), only Leicestershire being the exception. Of those 24 Premier Leagues, only 5 (including Derbyshire) do not already have a pyramid structure in place beneath them.
  2. In order to receive accreditation for the 2003 season onwards, all Premier Leagues must be supported by an open pyramid structure.
  3. The vast majority of major team sports in England (e.g. football, rugby and hockey) already operate through open pyramid structures.
  4. The other Leagues that would be involved in the proposed scheme i.e. the Derbyshire and Cheshire Cricket League, the Yorkshire and Derbyshire Cricket League and the Burton and District Cricket League, have already agreed to the proposal, provided that promotion to the County League Division 3 from their leagues is voluntary.

The Proposal

The Derbyshire Cricket Board is proposing that all the major leagues that have clubs who are members of the Board, and which are not currently part of any other County pyramid system, are brought together to create a County pyramid system for Derbyshire. The Leagues involved would be:

  • The Derbyshire County League
  • The Derbyshire and Cheshire League
  • The Yorkshire and Derbyshire League
  • The Burton and District League

The Derbyshire County League Division 1 would remain the feeder division to the Derbyshire Premier League. Below this, the County League would be split on a regional basis between North and South. The other Leagues would have optional promotion of their champion clubs to the appropriate section of County League Division 3.

Is this the way forward for Derbyshire League cricket? Which way will the vote go? Do you have any strong views for or against this proposal?
