Another Sri Lankan heading for Derbyshire?
by Alan Rowley, 4th August 2002

Shanuka DissananyakeShanuka Dissanayake, a friend and former team-mate of Chesterfield's Bradman Ediriweera, is looking for a move to the Derbyshire Leagues. Shanuka is currently playing for Acomb in the York and District Senior League.

Shanuka is in Yorkshire this season on a working holiday break from his job in the Hatton National Bank in Colombo. He told Sting In The Tail that he would very much like to return next year on a full pro contract. Shanuka bowls slow left-arm orthodox, and is an aggressive right-hand bat with a classical style.

On July 27th, Shanuka performed heroics for Acomb, against the Costcutter-sponsored all-stars of Dunnington in the Premier Division. Leaders Dunnington had to settle for second best for the first time this season when they could only gain the worst of a draw against their nearest rivals.

The Sri Lankan star carried his bat throughout the Acomb innings to make an unbeaten 124 in a total of 196-7 and then sent down 25 overs of left arm spin to take 4-64 to become one of the first two bowlers to go past the 50 wicket mark. He was supported by Dave Sykes throughout, with the Acomb skipper taking 3 for 95, and the pair were able to peg Dunnington to 168-8 with the West Indian duo of Collis King (55) and Alvin Kallicharran (32), combining with Hamid Khan (33) to ensure that Dunnington avoided their first defeat since the 2000 season.

Shanuka was again in devastating form on Saturday as second placed Acomb continued to bite into Dunnington's lead. Acomb's all-round star followed his 43 with a superb spell of left arm spin which earned him 9 for 48 which was the second best ever bowling analysis in the premier division and had the Clifton Alliance tumbling to 73 all out.

Derbyshire Premier and County league clubs who may be interested in him can see him in action up to September 7th in and around York. For more details of Shanuka, Acomb and the York and District Senior League, click the link below:
