Records hat-trick completed
by Dennis Wright, 7th July 2002

A hat trick of records was completed this week when Chilwell II stand in keeper Neil Hambley took an astonishing 7 dismissals in their 2F clash with East Leake II.

"When his brother Nick dropped out at the last minute I asked Neil to take the gloves" said skipper Peter Stewart. Neil had already had a good day scoring just over 50% of his side's final total of 125, finishing on 63. East Leake, 95 made a valiant effort but Neil took 5 catches and 2 stumping's in his record total. Captain Peter said "I had no idea he had broken the record until Press Secretary Dennis Wright called me". "Having checked the Web for Wicket Keeping records I am unable to see any better than 7" , said Dennis Wright "so Neil should be rightly proud of his achievement".

Lenton Abbey who lost last week to Gladstone attempting the tieing run, managed to go one better at home to Hucknall TA, who, batting first had posted 175. Stewart Hannagan 82* missed the final ball with one run still needed but the alert non-striker ran and the keeper missed the run out to leave the game tied. Carrington Cavaliers 162/9 did everything possible to help Belton win as their score was boosted by 41 WIDES! They still fell short by 45 runs

In 1D unbeaten Risley came close to losing that record against Kirkby Portland. Kirkby had scored 177 and mainly thanks to Andy Matthews 83, Risley did exactly the same. Top score of the day goes to 1F Old Dalby who's 245/7 was 134 to many for Welby. Long Eaton II & III's had a torrid time as they both were dismissed in the 20's. A teenage doing well was 14 yr old L.Tibbett 5/34 for Edingley 112/7 against Oxton 110.

Following two consecutive weeks in which 12 batsmen in the Gunn & Moore South Notts League scored centuries, runs were harder to come by on this week's damp wickets. Tony Newby with 117* of Cotgrave's 157/3, ensuring victory against previously unbeaten Lowdham, 154, in 1F, was the only batsman to pass 100.

In contrast, the bowlers made the most of the conditions, with five hauls of seven wickets being recorded this week. Anthony Timpson's 7/41 still left Hucknall short of the final wicket they needed to get a win, rather than a winning draw, against Eastwood Town in 1A. In 1E Frank Forman took 7/20, ensuring that Chilwell (63) were nowhere near matching East Leake's total of 172/8.

The best bowling figures of the day went to A Shotbolt of Kirkby Portland II in 2D. Although he took seven wickets for just 15 runs, Sawley and Long Eaton Park III (94) won by 6 runs. Barry Lightfoot's 7/18 for West Bridgford II in 2F helped skittle out Caythorpe IV for just 41 runs; well short of the total of 94 set by West Bridgford.

Bowling honours were shared in the Long Eaton II clash with Gedling Colliery II in 2B. Chris Garrett's 7/79 helped to restrict Gedling to 173/8, but then Mike Bailey and Matt McBride took five wickets apiece to leave Long Eaton's batsmen all out for 26.

In division 1A Gedling Colliery, 160, got a winning draw against Plumtree 102/9 to keep them in second place in the table. Meanwhile Attenborough's 191/6 win over Radcliffe on Trent 190/7 pushed Radcliffe into the bottom half of the table.

Long Eaton 179 moved to stay second in 1B after gaining a winning draw over Belvoir 156/8. Rolls Royce Leisure, 133 slumped to their first loss as 2nd place Bottesford increased the pressure with a 7 wicket victory. Whatton & Aslockton, 115/5, win at home to Thrumpton 113, offers a glimmer of survival, although they need a strong finish to the 2nd half of the season. Hickling 115/9, loss at home to Awsworth 112/7, enabled Toton Sycamore 127, to move top of 1E after their win away at Snibston Grange 116.

West Indian Caribs moved top of 1F following Lowdham surprisingly defeat at Cotgrave. Things are hotting up in 1G as Caunton, West Bridgford and Woodborough are battling for two promotion places. In 1H Rainworth Welfare dropped 4 places after their loss to Nottingham Victoria. Welfare set a modest 89 and at 50/1 Victoria felt the game was won. A spirited fight back by Rainworth saw Victoria limp home by just 1 wicket in an exciting finish. Kimberley II, 160/2, maintained top spot with an easy win at home to Attenborough II,159/7, while Clifton Village II, 77/4, consolidated 2nd place with an equally impressive drubbing of Hucknall II, 76. Wollaton maintained their recent good for with a 7 wicket win at home to Bottesford, 172/7.

Lady Bay Boots II batting hero Gulham Sarwar returned figures of 6/20 as Boots ripped the heart from West Bridgfordians, 47, challenge, a figure Boots passed for the loss of 3 wickets. Newstead Abbey moved into 2nd place of 2G as Toton Sycamore were unable to stop the Long Whatton train that sees them unbeaten and top by 3.5 points.
