Monster cheque handed over to Alfie
by Alan Rowley, 6th September 2003.

On the last weekend of the season, the Monsters 2003 project was closed with a presentation evening at Marehay Cricket Club, scene of the Monsters cricket match back in July. The event, which captured the imagination of the cricketing world, raised £4200 for young Alfie Swift to fulfill his wish.

The cheque was formally handed over to Alfie by Tibshelf skipper Kev Flint, whose innocent post on the site message board started the Monsters ball rolling. The interest that followed can only be described as phenominal attracting media attention in the press, television, radio and the 'net. As well as the tremendous coverage of the event in the Derby Evening Telegraph, we also made Wisden Cricket Monthly, Central Television, Sky Television, Ram FM and the local newspapers.

Everyone involved with the project gave it 100% effort, especially on the day, and the organisers deserve a big round of applause for what they achieved. It wasn't done for personal glory, so I won't name names, but everyone who helped should feel very proud of themselves.

As for the future, the Sting In The Tail Trust continues and cash is still being received. It looks like the Monsters bandwagon will roll into a cricket ground near you sometime in 2004.
