Anti-obesity law threat to cricket teas
The cricket tea, so long an integral part of club cricket, is threatened by European Health ruling 1.4.4 which states that clubs must not provide food or drink that is likely to cause harm or threaten the fitness of users. Food giants McDonalds have already been forced to change their menus to include side salads and fruit, and pub chain Wetherspoons have abolished 2 for 1 drinks promotions. The new ruling will be introduced in Summer 2004 and will have a devastating affect on the eating and drinking habits of cricketers and supporters throughout the country. Teas will have to pass an inspection by Euro officials and random spot checks will be introduced. The main points of the new ruling are:
Picnic hampers will not escape the new regulations as clubs will be held responsible for the contents of supporters pack-ups. Anyone who suffers health problems as a result of food consumed on club premises will be able to sue the club for damages. There is the very real threat that clubs will be forced to outlaw picnic hampers rather than face crippling legal charges should a case be taken to law. An action group Lay Of Our Food (L.O.O.F.) has already been formed to protest against European meddlings in the game. A spokesman for the group said: "This is a very dangerous ruling and if we allow them to get away with it, they will change a traditional way of life for good. We urge people to join our fight and protect our beloved game from the European Bureaucrats." If you would like more information on the new ruling or you want to join L.O.O.F., please click here and register your protest before it's too late.
