Players move on as preparations gain momentum As the first signs of Spring start to appear, so does the endless stream of player movements in the Derbyshire Leagues. Clubs have already started to strengthen their squads and the rumour mill is stepping up a gear.
Langley Mill, who have entered a second team this season, have recruited Gary Hickinbotham from Old Park and Daniel Lacey moves from Stainsby Hall. Also making the short journey from Stainsby Hall after years of loyal service is Paul Leatherland. Over at Victoria Avenue, Ockbrook and Borrowash have lost Brian Gladwin, who returns to Chesterfield, and Tom Holmes who makes the trip over the fields to Spondon. Joining Ockbrook are Chris Dunn, who leaves ailing Selston Town, Neil Smith, who leaves Sawley and Long Eaton Park to join brother Trevor, and Jake Needham, who surprisingly leaves National Club Champions Sandiacre Town.
Dunstall look determined to rejoin the top flight at the first attempt judging by their close season signings so far. The Staffordshire club have recruited ex-England Test player Devon Malcolm, former Warwickshire all-rounder Mo Sheikh and wicket-keeper / batsman Stuart Eustace, who becomes Cricket Manager. Eustace, a former member of the Lord's Ground Staff, joins the club from Moseley. Premier League strugglers Wirksworth will be looking to dispel memories of a disappointing 2003 with the addition of ex-Indian Test and One Day International seamer Paras Mhambrey. The Indian, who is currently with the National Squad, will pass on his pace bowling skills as club coach. With Sandiacre Town looking to hold on to their National Club Champions crown and Clifton expecting more success after their League and Cup double, it looks like being a thrilling 2004 season.
