The Cat is still purring! The sign on the back of Phil Tufnell's support van said it all - with 330 miles behind him and 170 left to go, The Cat is definitely still purring. After Bank Holiday Monday's gruelling march to Parwich, Tufnell and co breezed through the 23 miles to Hathersage, arriving almost dead on schedule. The walkers were drenched as they trundled up the main street to Hathersage Cricket Club. Rain had fallen steadily throughout the day, but as if on order, the clouds dispersed and the sun shone as the party arrived at the Yorkshire and Derbyshire League club.
As he turned the corner, cricketers appeared as if from nowhere to greet the I'm A Celebrity star and his crew. The cricket club had arranged a game against a Longcliffe League XI and, despite the heavy rain throughout the day, the club were determined a game should take place. The ground was very muddy and the track ends were covered in sawdust, but the village outfit would not be detered. Play commenced as soon as Phil arrived and whilst he signed autographs, the players trudged out to the middle.
Tufnell had little time to admire the attractive Peak District setting as he walked across the county prior to leaving for South Yorkshire. A small crowd were eager to be photographed with the star and congratulate him on his epic performance so far. Phil ensured all autograph hunters were satisfied before heading to his hotel to dry out and receive the attentions of his travelling physio. The locals finished their game before adjourning to the nearby Little John pub for a well-earned pint or two. Phil returns to Derbyshire on June 9th when the party reaches Hartington. Wirksworth Cricket Club is the venue for Thursday 10th June before the trip to Eastwood and the Sting v Outlawed game on the 11th. The walk ends at lunch on day three of the New Zealand Test match at Trent Bridge.
