Rolls Royce celebrate 50 year anniversary Rolls Royce Leisure celebrate 50 years of cricket at their present ground in Hucknall this year. To celebrate the event, the club are organising a couple of celebrity events in July, including a Twenty/20 match for Paul Johnson's benefit year. Rolls Royce Cricket Club originally played their cricket at nearby Titchfield Park. They moved to their present location on Watnall Road on 8th May 1954 and despite initial teething problems with the square, they soon settled at the location. Stephen Bagnall told 'the follow on' that the first square "did not play all that well as the ball used to jump off a good length and it was moved to its present location". The first ball on the new ground was bowled by Bill Hart and the ball used is kept on permanent display in a cabinet at the Rolls Royce Leisure Centre.
The Paul Johnson benefit game takes place at the Watnall Road ground on Friday 16th July 2004, starting at 5:45pm. This will be followed by a race night in the club house with at least six races for you to lose your cash on. Before that, the club are holding a Sportsman's Evening, with the ever-popular Geoff Miller as guest speaker. This event takes place on Thursday 8th July. More details on either of these events from Brian Pickering on 07970 255729 or Andy Wheat on 07967 387605.
In their anniversary season, the club are enjoying a successful time, lying just off the early pace in division A of the South Nottinghamshire League. If they can manage to string together a few good wins, they could soon be challenging for the league title and promotion to the Nottinghamshire Premier League. What better way to celebrate an anniversary?
