An evening in the company of Merv Hughes

Winshill Cricket Club have announced a major fund raising event in their club's calendar. The event is being billed as 'An evening in the company of the legendary cricketer, Merv Hughes' and is being held at the Belvedere Park Club, in Belvedere Road, Burton upon Trent, on Monday July 11th.

With the much awaited Ashes series just around the corner, the club are proud to announce that one of cricket's greats has accepted their invitation to be the prime guest speaker. The Australian legendary fast bowler had a distinguished Test career taking a total of 212 wickets and scored 1,032 runs.

Winshill have also secured the services of acclaimed Radio Five presenter, John Rawling as the compere for the evening. Tickets are priced at £30.00 per head or £300.00 for a table of 10. This price includes a three course meal and coffee.

Club secretary Tim Mallendar told 'the follow on': "We keenly encourage people from all walks of life to come along and play cricket here at Winshill. With running three adult sides and three youth sides, the money for their development and training has to be sought from numerous sources. It is regrettable that the local schools and the surrounding area do not cater for cricket in their curriculums so we, as a Club, have taken it upon ourselves to actively promote youth cricket."

Mallendar continued: "The Club's Committee have decided this year to extend the invitations to ladies, acknowledging that to have the opportunity to listen to the great Merv Hughes is an un-missable occasion. No doubt you may well have attended a function such as this in the past and from this experience, then you will realise the excellent opportunities that they present in entertaining clients and or friends in a hospitable and comfortable environment."
