Scorers course at Worksop
by Paul Barker, 10th February 2006

In the game of cricket there can be no doubt that playing is the ultimate goal, but there does come a time when even though the spirit is willing, the body can no longer carry out the tasks it once used to. It always baffles me that when many cricketers retire, they have no further contact with the game that they have been involved with and loved for so many years.

The game is crying out for Umpires and Scorers and there has never been a better time to become involved in the game. Long gone are the days when anybody who felt like it just donned the white coat or pulled a pen out of their pockets and scored. There is now expert training to get you properly tuned for this work and if you want to progress even higher, examinations are held to help you attain the highest of standards.

The scorers lot is hugely different from what it used to be. There is still the standard method which is all you need to know, but for the very keen you can record all the facts and be as knowledgeable as the people you hear on the TV or Radio who can tell you how many balls they have faced and how many minutes it has taken them to attain their score plus much more.

With this in mind a Scorers Course is taking place at Worksop Cricket Club on Central Avenue starting next Tuesday 14th February and this lasts for four weeks. Further enquires will be fielded by Mr. Peter McKenzie on 01909 733094.

At the end of this four week course an opportunity will arrive for would be scorers to sit the Introductory Level Examination but the people running the course wish to stress that this is not compulsory just optional and depending on how far you want to go.

So don’t let all the experience that you gleaned from your playing days on the cricket field go to waste. There is so much to enjoy once retirement is forced upon you. In addition to this don’t feel ruled out if you have never played the game, anyone can learn and it is a well known fact that over the years many people have gone on to umpire and score in test cricket without ever playing the game, so there is opportunities to reach the top no matter what background you come from..

It is also open to the female gender so there is no discrimination. Cricket is the game for everyone so please do your bit and help our local clubs and leagues by officiating in some capacity. Your services are of immense value.
