Derbyshire County Cricket League report - 01/09/01
by Gwyn Jones, 3rd September 2001

Abbey Glass Division 1

Saturday's results confirm that Sawley & Long Eaton Park are the champions and will return to the Premier League next season, provided that they satisfy the Grounds Committee that their ground and facilities meet the required standard. Also, it is now confirmed that Mickleover and Ticknall are the two relegated teams.

Staveley Welfare 114 lost to Sawley 115-3 by 7 wickets

Paul May's innings of 50 not out represented nearly half of Staveley's score. This week the damage was done by Neil Smith (6-48), with Ahmed Gondal (3-40) playing a secondary role. Danny Birch (38) was Sawley's top scorer. If they can retain the services of Ahmed Gondal they should do well in the Premier League, but they will find that the opposition is much stronger.

Clifon 246-7 beat Morton 245-5 by 3 wickets

An excellent game, played by two of the top sides in this Division. There was another splendid innings from Scott Phillips (126), with good support from Neil Elks (55). It was a tough target for Clifton, but they kept up with the required run rate, thanks to Con de Lange (71) and Kamran Afzaal (96 not out). The scores were tied at the last ball, which Umar Zamman hit for four.

Elvaston 95 lost to Spondon 96-1 by 9 wickets

Elvaston's League form has declined as their fortunes have improved in the National Village Cup. We all hope that the magic returns at Lord's next week-end. Lee Archer showed some resistance with 31, but the batting was disappointing as they were skittled out by Spondon, for whom Paul Cook took 3-11. Spondon lost an early wicket but Joe Ashdown (51 not out) and Dave Thomas (37 not out) saw them home quite comfortably.

Lullington Park 149-9 drew with West Hallam 229-7

West Hallam were desperately close to winning this game. They posted a big target with Campbell Ogilvie scoring 80, James Chapman 50 and Chris Rudd 46. David Mudd took 4-47 for Lullington, but their batsmen struggled against Campbell Ogilvie (3-53) and Steve Attenborough 3-27 and were left hanging on with one wicket left.

Shipley Hall 95-5 beat Mickleover 94 by 5 wickets

Mark Heath was 33 not out for Mickleover, but the batting failed again. For Shipley Harvinder Sodhi took took 3-31, but their reply faltered as they lost five wickets. Stefan Gamble was their top scorer with 35.

Ticknall 168-7 lost to Belper Meadows 171-3 by 7 wickets

Paul Sackly made 30 and Stuart Cadman 58 not out in Ticknall's innings, with Gareth Goodall taking 3-38 and Scott Sager 3-33. In the Belper innings Dave King made 33 and Dave Halliday (65 not out) and Rob Tomlinson (37 not out) took them to a comfortable win.

Abbey Glass Division 2

Brailsford 72 lost to Selston Town 75-1 by 9 wickets

This big win ensures that Selston Town are assured of promotion, but it is mathematically possible for Marehay to overtake them.Scott Godfrey (3-22) and John Barnett (4-18) did the damage, before Chris Dunn (32 not out) steered Selston home for an easy win.

Marehay 212-8 beat Swarkestone 163 by 49 runs

Another close finish, with Marehay clinching victory off the last ball, and gaining 27 valuable points. Andy Walters made 61 and Adrian Vickerage 75 not out in Marehay's score, with Swarkestone's Dave Dixon taking 5-43. Steve Dixon made 35 in their reply, with Brian Gration taking 4-48

Duffield 107-7 lost to Nutbrook 108-3 by 7 wickets

This was a low score by Duffield, with Jonathan Rhodes making 32. David Hack took 4-21 for Nutbrook and David Sturt was 64 not out as trhey romped home.

Derbyshire Building Society Division 3A

Denby 2nds 164-6 beat Rolls Royce 164-6 by 4 wickets

Denby look favourites to win this Divi sion. They are three points ahead of Little Eaton, with two games to play, whilst Little Eaton have only one game left. Their game with Rolls Royce was a tight affair, with Dave Cope taking 4-42 in the dismissal of Rolls Royce, Ross Perry-Taylor (59), Joe Greenhalgh (31) and Neil Worthington (31 not out) were the main scorers in Denby's reply.
