Derbyshire Premier League match reports - 04/08/01
by Gwyn Jones, 5th August 2001

Only one game was played to a conclusion in the Premier League, that between Dunstall and Quarndon. All other games were seriously rain affected.

Dunstall 169-7 drew with Quarndon 294-5
B W Financial Services Ltd Man of the Match - Phil Robinson

This was a good result for Quarndon because it gave them eighteen points for the winning draw, more points than any other team in this Division. They were again indebted to Phil Robinson who was in splendid form in compiling another big century (139), and there was excellent support from young Kevin Hollis (69) and Billy Bagshaw (32 not out). There was rain about, but it didn't prevent them finishing within the overs. Dunstall fell behind in their reply, but there was a good response from Jamie Benstead who made 70. For Quarndon Kevin Newbold took 3-30.

Denby 228-7 v Ilkeston Rutland 47-1. No Result
B W Financial Services Ltd Man of the Match - Ian Parkin

Denby won the toss and elected to bat, clearly chasing the 27 points. They batted with urgency and their aggression took them to 228 in 45.5 overs. By declaring at that point they ensured that under the League rules Ilkeston had the same number of balls in their reply. With rain about this was a bold bid to gamble on the win. In the event rain hit the ground after Ilkeston had batted for 9 overs and the strategy was frustrated . In the Denby innings Ian Parkin made 71, Mark Pykett 43, Shannon Waters 47 and Steve Bullock 40 not out, and for Ilkeston Martin Brandrick persevered to take 3-78.

Heanor Town 69-3 v Ockbrook 184-8. No Result
B W Financial Services Ltd Man of the Match - Johnny Owen

With their sight on the League Championship Ockbrook batted first and felt confident enough to declare after 47 overs. Johnny Owen made 50, Simon King 48, and Nigel Sulley 35. Richard Bates took 3-62 for Heanor. The game ended after Heanor had batted for 24 overs, with honours even at 9 points apiece.

Langley Mill 87-4 v Stainsby Hall 257-8. No Result
B W Financial Services Ltd Man of the Match - Peter Davies

Stainsby Hall have been having a torrid time of late and in this bottom of the table clash they showed their fighting spirit. Skipper Peter Davies played the captain's part in scoring a century (103) and there was determination in the performances of Adrian Marsh (38) and Paul Leatherland (33 not out). The Millers' reply was halted by the rain, but not before their overseas player, Navid Latif, had shown what he can do. He had taken 4-30 in the Stainsby innings and was 31 not out, continuing his recent good form with the bat. For Stainsby Paul Leatherland completed a good match by taking 3-8.

Sandiacre Town 147-5 v Alvaston & Boulton 214-9. No Result
B W Financial Services Ltd Man of the Match - John Trueman

There was an unfortunate incident during the innings of Alvaston & Boulton when the very popular Premier League lady umpire, Annette Owen was struck on the arm from a fierce hit. She was taken to hospital where it was found that she had broken the ulna in at least two places. The arm was put in plaster and she was allowed to go home, but she will need to see a consultant to determine what surgery is needed. In the A&B innings Matt Boyer continued his good form in making 69, and he was supported by Gary Smith (31) and Nathan Richards (30). John Trueman was clearly the man of the match, taking 6-25 and then scoring 55 not out in Sandiacre's shortened reply. Darren Pooley took 3-49 for A&B.

Wirksworth v Chesterfield 247-5. No Result
B W Financial Services Ltd Man of the Match - David Adams

This game was ruined by the rain which prevented Chesterfield from completing their innings. They batted well and threatened a huge score, having reached 247 from 49.3 overs. David Adams made 64, Ed Crowther 49 and Richard Joy 30 not out, and for Wirksworth Andy Barlow rook 3-76.
