Derbyshire v Hampshire, 05/08/01
by Alan Rowley, 6th August 2001

Hampshire cruised to an easy nine wicket victory over Derbyshire at the County Ground thanks to an unbeaten second wicket stand of 144 in 24 overs by Derek Kenway and Jason Laney.

Kenway contributed 93 from just 87 balls including 10 fours and 2 sixes whilst Laney scored 62 from 97 balls. The two steered Hampshire to victory with eight overs to spare in this match that was reduced to 44 overs because of morning rain.

Derbyshire's total was again woefully inadequate. Michael Di Venuto scored 42, but with Derbyshire struggling at 100 for 5 it was left to Karl Krikken and Luke Sutton to restore some pride and at least give Hampshire something to chase.

Krikken and Sutton put on an unbeaten 84 as both players finished on 42 not out, but this was nowhere near enough to give the Derbyshire bowlers any chance. Hampshire now look a good bet for promotion to Division One whilst Derbyshire continue their slump down the table.
