Rain misery for South Notts
by Dennis Wright, 9th May 2004

Misery as South Notts cricket was washed away by heavy rain that hit the area on Friday evening and Saturday morning. Only six of 75 games were started and all had results.

Kimberley Institute II’s poor start continued as they were beaten by Clifton Village II. Batting first, Clifton scored 203/9 with Kristian Murden hitting the highest score of the day, 83 not out. Russ Kirk (3/46) and Ben Maddison (3/9) both bowled well but were unable to hold back the late charge for runs. Steve Bennett took up the challenge for Kimberley, but as he fell for 47 so did any chance Kimberley had of winning this match. Scott Browitt (4/28) and Jeff Kemp (3/25) drove home Clifton’s advantage to win by 46 runs.

Scores:

Kimberley Institute II 157-5 (5 pts) lost to Clifton Village II 203-9 (20 pts)
For Kimberley: Steve Bennett 47, Ben Maddison 3-9, Russ Kirk 3-46
For Clifton Village: Kristian Murden 83no, Scott Browitt 4-28, Jeff Kemp 3-25

Lady Bay Boots II were able, against all the odds, to inflict defeat on Willoughby in the E/F clash. 16 year old Alamgir Khan hit 40 and Tagesh Naik 29 despite the damp outfield making scoring difficult. Boots finished on 146/9, Geno Taj (4/37) was easily the pick of the Willoughby bowlers. Willoughby, in response, were soon in trouble as Salim Mohammed (4/2) ripped out the heart of the batting. Mick Ireland top scored with an unlucky 13 as Willoughby were dismissed 91 runs short.

Scores:

Lady Bay Boots II 146-9 (19 pts) beat Willoughby OTW 55 (3 pts)
For Lady Bay Boots: Alamgir Khan 40, Tajesh Naik 29, Salim Mohammed 4-2
For Willoughby OTW: Mick Ireland 13, Geno Taj 4-37

Another game to be completed was the Division K fixture of Attenborough III which was also played at the Lady Bay ground. Martin Firbank (34) and Joe Drury (21) were largely responsible for Attenborough’s 120/9. Oxton struggled to make inroads but did keep the runs to a minimum with tight bowling from John Harris (2/25) and Matthew Wheatley (2/27). Andrew Draper looked like winning the game single handed for Oxton as his guile brought him a very impressive 41 but after his dismissal the Oxton challenge faltered as Michael Turner (2/5) wrapped up the victory for Attenborough III by 24 runs.

Amazingly there were two completed games in this division, as Lambley made it 2 from 2 with a win over Newstead Abbey II. Dave Marshall (40) along with Alex Cox were held in check by Gareth Blinkthorn, (4/32), as Lambley struggled to 133/9. Once Dwayne Simpson (3/20) had struck early on for Lambley, Newstead’s ship was steadied by Ian Greatorex (37) and Michael Crossland but both were unable to steer them to victory as Newstead fell short by 19 runs.

Scores:

Attenborough III 120-9 (17 pts) beat Oxton 96 (3 pts)
For Attenborough: Martin Firbank 34, Joe Drury 21, Michael Turner 2-5
For Oxton: Andrew Draper 41, John Harris 2-25, Matthew Wheatley 2-27

Lambley 133-9 (18 pts) beat Newstead Abbey & Village II 114 (4 pts)
For Lambley: Dave Marshall 40, Alex Cox 28, Dwayne Simpson 3-20
For Newstead Abbey & Village: Ian Greatorex 37, Michael Crossland 30, Gareth Blinkthorn 4-32

Sawley & Long Eaton Park boasted games for all 3 teams with their 3rd XI gaining victory over Stoke Bardolph in Division L. Stoke Bardolph batted first and with Kris Seymour (39), and Howard Mew (36) scoring at a brisk pace a huge total looked on the cards. However, Andy Evans (4/39) and 15year old Caleb Mierkalns (2/22) held the score to a manageable 145/8. It was the youngster Mierkalns (48) and Akhill Avasthy (44) who made light work of Stoke’s total despite Scott Pratt’s 2/29. Sawley finished comfortable winners by 6 wickets.

Scores:

Sawley & Long Eaton Park III 146-4 (19 pts) beat Stoke Bardolph 145-8 (5 pts)
For Sawley & Long Eaton Park: Caleb Mierkalns 48 and 2-22, Akhil Avasthy 44, Andy Evans 4-39
For Stoke Bardolph: Kris Seymour 39, Howard Mew 36, Scott Pratt 2-29

Collingham III batted sensibly in their game against Nottingham III and managed to accumulate 155/4 with Gary Dickinson (58) and Ashley Locke (41) impressing all. Tom England (55) took up the challenge for Nottingham but with the next best score, 19, by veteran Vic Taylor they were always struggling to stay up with the run rate. Collingham’s Danny Alcock’s 5/26 was the final nail in Nottingham’s coffin as they were held to 136/8

Scores:

Collingham III 155-4 (17 pts) beat Nottingham III 136-8 (3 pts)
For Collingham: Gary Dickinson 58, Ashley Locke 41 and 1-24, Danny Alcock 5-26
For Nottingham: Tom England 55, Vic Taylor 19,  Barry Reisford 1-24
