Khalid grabs back highest score record
by Dennis Wright, 14th June 2004

Seven centuries, a new league record and runs galore were seen on Saturday despite the cloudy conditions. Shiraz Khalid has taken back the highest individual score when he hit an unbeaten 236* in 45 overs at home to Stapleford. He scored at 5 an over whilst the rest of his team added 95 runs as Rainworth Welfare scored 331/5. Stapleford, left demoralised by that performance were dismissed for just 67. It is the second week that Rainworth have humiliated the second placed team in Division J.

Another centurion worthy of note was 15yr old Alistair Walters who is already an accomplished wicket keeper, but completed his maiden league century for Clifton Village II hitting 100 not out. He is also the youngest winner of a cup winner’s medal when at the age of 13 he kept wicket for Clifton vs Kimberley. Thrumpton’s ex Notts star Andy Pick took his 2nd hat-trick of the season whilst in the same game 12yr old Adam Sheppard of Radcliffe II took 3 wickets in 4 balls.

Division A is hotting up but leaders Plumtree maintain top spot courtesy of another winning draw, this one away at Newstead. Plumtree had batted first scoring 197/9, a total Newstead gave up on early as they limped to 135/6. Long Eaton’s professional Umar Hassan (8/61) ripped through Eastwood Town’s batting line up leaving them with a total of just 113 to defend, not surprisingly Long Eaton (114/1) passed the total with ease.

Winless Attenborough batted first at home to Gedling Colliery and managed 167/9 off their overs. Gedling however struggled and, with 2 balls and 1 wicket left, hit the winning runs for a hard fought victory. Loughborough Carillon (178/8) were always looking down the barrel of defeat as Balderton easily chased down the total for the loss of 3wkts. In the division’s final match Radcliffe on Trent (152/7) are still struggling as they lost again, this time at home to Rolls Royce Leisure (153/3).

Division B leaders Bramcote (181/7) were undone by bottom club Thurgarton who passed the winning line with 6wkts to spare. Simon Litchfield hit 103* for Gotham (241/5) but Belvoir (228/9) kept all the result options open to the end before settling with a losing draw. Ellerslie (170/7) take over top spot having defeated Bottesford (165/7).  Carl Blake 120* steered Gedling Sherwood to victory and 2nd position with a 9wkt victory over Nottingham (208).

A peculiar match took place at Newark.  The home team batted first and scored 209/6 with Hucknall’s Gavin Johnson taking 6/33, then Hucknall shut up shop scoring 88/7 claiming only 4 points in a losing bore draw.

An unlucky Jeff Newcomb (99) just missed out on a century but his side, Kirkby Portland (234/5) still beat Lady Bay Boots (183) by 51runs. Leaders of CD Wilsons (138/2) cruised past bottom side Nuthall (136) to cement both positions. Willoughby on the Wolds’ (226) Ben Boot hit 81* as they won a way at Whatton Aslockton (143/9).

There were big wins for Toton Sycamore (101/3) who beat Notts. Unity Casuals (99) by 7wkts, a winning margin shared by Long Whatton (164/3) over Underwood (163/9) and Lady Bay Boots II (158/3) over Collingham II (156). West Indian Caribs (314/6 dec) had James Chulan in unstoppable form hitting 112*, then they dismissed Beeston for 200.

Eastwood Town II made up for their 1st XI disappointment as Dwayne Buckley was again in the runs scoring 82 at home to Epperstone who recorded the day’s lowest score of 45 all out.  There was an exciting finish to the game at East Leake. Bottesford II batting first scored 170/9 and East Leake closed in on victory despite losing wickets only to fail by 5 runs with 2 balls remaining. In similar circumstances Gladstone posted 156/8 and Kirkby Portland need 4 off the last ball but finished two runs short of victory.

Rolls Royce Leisure II hit a mighty 283 with Alan Pearson 119, Newark could only reach 76/8 to lose by 207 runs.  Lenton Abbey turned in one of the most successful come-backs of the day when they defeated Lambley (108). Lenton were reduced to 19/5 before winning by 4wkts, thanks to Gareth Lewis (62 ) and Stuart Hanagan (26*). Sawley & Long Eaton Park III notched an impressive 251/4 at home to Belvoir II, Mick Hopkins (86) and Jeff Glover (72) the main contributors.  Belvoir batted well for 161, however 11 year old Rachael Hopkins had a day to remember taking a good catch and recording bowling figures of 1/7.

Underwood’s (99) Craig Smithers (aged 16) took 6/27 but ended up on the losing side against Gedling Sherwood III (167).  Balderton were in dire straits away at Willoughby II, chasing only 100 they were 69/9 before Russell Rose (18*) and John Griffin (12*) brought them home for an improbable victory. Ross Crombie hit the final century of the day for Plumtree III, in their win over Caythorpe IV. David Proverbs (7-19) helped Thrumpton (126) to reach the top of Division R with a win at Kimberley IV (94). 14 year old debutant Tom Haw took 4/34 away at Lowdham (237/7) but still ended up on the losing side by 89 runs.
