Plumtree edge closer to championship
by Dennis Wright, 15th August 2004

Plumtree (134/5) moved a step closer to their expected Champions spot beating Newstead (132/9), who have to win their remaining games to have any hope of survival.  Gedling Colliery are hoping for a slip-up as they maintained title hopes beating Attenborough (115) by 6 wickets.

No change at the top of Division B as the games fell foul of the week’s weather.  At the bottom Thurgarton’s (168) winning draw over Bramcote (145/9) moved them out of the bottom two as Hucknall (121) slipped down after a home defeat to Newark (222/4) with Capt. John Wilson 106* and Ross Taylor 86 showing the way. Clifton Village II took advantage of Wilsons’ No Result and average points by collecting the maximum 20 on offer as they beat fellow promotion hopefuls West Bridgfordians (150) by 5 wickets with Kristan Murdon hitting 73; the win moves them into the top two.

A first win of the season for relegated Wymeswold (183/5) over Radcliffe on Trent II (87) lifts them off the bottom of CD. Lady Bay Boots II took just 19 overs, but lost 6 wickets, as they chased down Toton Sycamore’s 83, to maintain top spot in EF. Kinoulton and Stanton by Dale fought a nail-biting relegation battle in GH. Stanton batted first and scored 145/7 with Simon Welch 48. In-form batsman Steve Harling (62) took Kinoulton to within a whisker of victory and with the final two overs to go, they needed just two runs for victory with 4 wickets in hand. Stanton held their nerve with Simon Taylor returning match figures of 5/9 as Kinoulton slumped to 144 all out.Calverton II (159) top the division beating Bottesford (93) with Ian Wright (6/23) dominating. With Eastwood II’s game lost to the weather and Snibston without a game, this division is the hardest to call; with 3 games to go any one of the three could still miss out on promotion.

Stapleford (149) beat Rainworth in Division J as Gary Dawson 5/16 put in dent in Rainworth’s (105) promotion hopes. Gladstone hit the days highest score of 271/4 with Simon Taylor 87 and Keith Marrow 75*, as they romped to victory over Kirkby Portland II (106). Top performances in L from Ian Bennett (6/13) as Willoughby (73/5) beat Balderton II (70); Gavin Lewis (95) helped Old Paviors to 214/5, 72 runs too many for West Bridgfordians II (142); and James Mark 6/27 as Belton (123) lost to Basford Hall Old Boys (145).

The day’s highest individual score came from Beeston II’s Steve Jones, whose 118 helped his side to a massive 263/6 setting up a win over Newstead III (57) by 209 runs. With Plumtree III’s game lost to the weather, Clifton Village III (235), including a score of 89 from Craig Fairhall, moved closer to the top, picking up a maximum 20 points as they beat Cotgrave II (165). The day’s best bowling performance came in Division R as Toton Sycamore II’s (135/6) Tim Brealey improved on last weeks League PB of 6/61 to take 7/30 at home to Lowdham II (134).

As the season draws to a close a number of promotion and relegation issues have been resolved. With the potential two relegated from the Premier there can be no saving Radcliffe and Newstead in Division A with Ellerslie returning to the top flight. Nuthall and Wymeswold will start 2005 in E.

Promoted Rolls Royce II, beaten just once, will go up as champions of J if they win one of the reaming two games. Shepshed Town III will be thankful of the drop as they have failed to win all season in K whilst Hoveringham are promoted and just need 1 point to be champions. Carrington Cavaliers, who reached the Raleigh cup final again, are promoted whilst Balderton II are down from L.

Bingham are champions of M and Whatton go down with Gedling & Sherwood if they fail to gain maximum points from their final games; even if they do, however, they still go down if Chilwell II gain 5 points.  Undefeated Plumtree III and Clifton Village III both move up for the second time in two years whilst West Bridgford Legion II and East Leake II slip into the bottom division.
