Tadd and Tebbutt nine wicket hauls lead the way
by Dennis Wright, 17th May 2004

There were nine wickets apiece as Andy Tadd (9/22) of Ravenshead and Ben Tebbutt (9/28) of Nottingham led the way for the bowlers in this weekend’s encounters in the South Notts Cricket League.  Their performances were the 4th and 5th best in the League’s history.

Tadd, who is marrying later this year, took the first 7 wkts in their home game with Farndon.  His wickets included 4 bowled and a caught & bowled.  Tebbutt’s personal best performance was helped by no fewer than 5 LBWs; he also missed out on a hat-trick  after taking the 7th & 8th batsmen in consecutive balls.

On the batting front, the return of Shiraz Khalid sees him carrying on for Rainworth as he left off last season, hitting 190. Centuries too for Bramcote II’s Norman Jowett (116) and Plumtree III’s Ross Crombie (106). Bowlers were in the fore this weekend as there were 9 performances of 6 or more wickets.

Graeme Wright of Rolls Royce Leisure (185), took 7/37 to help his side to a comfortable win over Attenborough (121). Eastwood Town (197/5), with Neil Gregory 65, pulled off the surprise of the day beating Radcliffe on Trent (196/5). Loughborough Carillon (168/8), shared a draw with Newstead (194), who had the lion’s share of the points. Plumtree (160/5) beat Long Eaton (158/9), whilst Gedling Colliery had the biggest victory in the division winning by 8wkts at home to Balderton (157), with Indika Gallagie on 93.

In Division B, David Warburton was also in the wickets taking 6/50 and holding Nottingham to 109/9. Nottingham then turned to their hero, Ben Tebbutt, whose 9/28 secured victory by 20 runs. Ellerslie (183/8) held on for a winning draw over Bramcote (161/8). Thurgarton continue to struggle as they were dismissed for 81, although Belvoir had to work hard losing 8 wickets before hitting the winning runs with a six. Hucknall failed to collect a point as they were beaten by 8 wickets at home to Gedling & Sherwood (118/2).

Kimberley Institute II (173/8), finally found the winning formula at the fourth attempt easily beating Hickling (67). Clifton Village II (173/9) came out top in this close encounter with Keyworth (163/9) but nails were bitten as Keyworth powered their way towards the finishing line with Rob Baker 52.  Philip Baker (81*) and Richard Deeley (41*) added an unbeaten 136 for the 3rd wicket to help Stanton by Dale beat Nuthall (163/8).

Plumtree II completed their 3rd win of the season beating Awsworth (145/9) by 6 wickets. Extras were top score in Wilsons (141/9) innings at home to Southwell II, a staggering unbeaten 50 of them. Southwell lost by only 27 runs and had time to reflect on their bowling performance.

No question about the performance of the day in Division E/F it was Ravenshead’s Andy Tadd, who not only took 9/22 but also hit 81 of Ravenshead’s 218/7. Farndon did not have any answer to the total, being dismissed for 53. 60 year old David Fawcett was in the runs for Hucknall II, hitting 41 as he guided his side to 97/4 for an easy victory against Notts Unity casuals (96/9).

Tony Beck (6/32), turned in his best bowling spell for Toton Sycamore as Gedling & Sherwood could only muster 115/8, a total Toton passed with ease. The division’s heavy weight side Gedling Colliery II delivered a knock-out punch to Willoughby by bowling them out for only 111; however Gedling lost 7 wkts in the chase.

Collingham II entertained West Indian Caribs who had not bowled a ball so far this season. Caribs soon showed the class that delivered them the Raleigh Cup last season and four consecutive promotions. Sagir Akhter (45)  led the way as they rattled up 212, former Sheffield United coach Steve Thompson (6/40) the pick of Collingham’s attack.  Collingham set after the total in fine fashion with a blazing 81 from Charles Lucas and victory seemed certain, but there was a twist in the outcome as Akhter (3/37) and Sabir Dad (3/34) restricted the score to 200/9.  Beeston continued their good form with victory over West Bridgford legion (110), by 3 wickets.

Calverton II (140) produced 92 runs more than they needed to beat Bestwood Village (48). Norman Jowett’s ton helped Bramcote II to 201/4 but Nottingham II passed the total with 4 wickets to spare in division G/H. Another man in form with the bat was Tony Newby (92) of Cotgrave (198/6); his score helped Cotgrave beat East Bridgford by 18 runs.

Eastwood Town II looked in trouble as they could only manage 100, however Kinoulton struggled even more and finished 7 runs short with a wicket in hand.  Snibston Grange (200/9) overcame the potentially dangerous Gotham II by a staggering 153 runs. West Bridgford’s troubles are building up as they were skittled out for only 59, losing to Stanton by Dale II by 8 wickets.
