Long Eaton ball tampering drama
by Dennis Wright, 23rd May 2004

A weekend of high drama and high scores, saw two firsts for the Gunn & Moore SNCL. In Division J, Stapleford’s Mick Bowen was “timed out”, the first ever in the league; while in Division A, Radcliffe-on-Trent were awarded 5 penalty runs when the umpires deemed Long Eaton had tampered with the ball. There were also two hat-tricks in the weekends games, as first Andy Pick took 4 in 4 balls for Thrumpton and then Tony Beck took a hat-trick to steer Toton Sycamore to a narrow victory over Chilwell.

Meanwhile, Risley and Old Paviors battled into the night to finish their game. Paviors batted first and with Michael Rees hitting 194, the day’s highest score, they posted 304/3. It was then left to Risley to chase the game on a perfect batting wicket; they came close before running out of overs, and light, to finish on 288/7.

Eastwood Town continue to dominate division A, recording their third win. Balderton had scored 232/5 with Alan Jackson hitting 85; however Ijaz Ahmed (134*) took Eastwood to victory for the loss of only 4 wickets. Gedling Colliery (189/7), pre-season bookies’ favourites, made light work of Newstead Abbey Village’s 115. Rob Sutton (132), took Radcliffe to an impressive 234/7, including the penalty runs. Long Eaton finished well down on 173/8 but hung on for a losing draw. Rolls Royce Leisure (229) also had to settle for a draw as Loughborough Carillon (169/9), would not give up their last wicket.

Thurgarton, in Division B, are struggling to find any sort of form as they were dismissed for 110, a total passed by Hucknall for the loss of 3 wickets. Gedling & Sherwood (174) just missed out on victory as Gotham Village (150/9), hung on for a losing draw. Nigel Jones’ 79 for Bramcote helped the home side chase down Bottesford’s 175/8 for their first win of the season., while Nottingham (176/7), beat Belvoir 172 in the remaining fixture.

Kimberley Institute II scored 163/9 at home to Stanton by Dale. Stanton then homed in on a victory requiring just 5 runs from the last two overs with 6 wickets in hand. However pressure mounted and by the final ball one run was still needed for victory, a quick single was attempted in vain as the batsman was run out, with the game finishing as a tie.

Keywoth  made159/1 thanks mainly to Chris Ladd 88* to beat Attenborough (158/5). Clifton Village II (187/7) made it 3 wins from 4, this time beating Awsworth (142/9). Thrumpton’s Andy Pick’s 6/23, taking 4 wickets in 4 balls, saw off Lady Bay Boots’ (105) efforts to reach Thrumpton’s total of 172.

A high scoring encounter at Plumtree saw West Bridgfordians chase down Plumtree II’s 237/5. Mark Oldham was in the runs again, hitting 113, only to see Bridgfordians’ John Sheard hit 144*. Hickling have found the winning formula again, beating Wollaton II 163, by 8 runs.

Gedling Colliery II (188/2) confirmed their promotion favourites tag by beating fellow contenders West Indian Caribs (185), by 8 wickets. A hat-trick from Toton Sycamore’s Tony Beck turned the game against Chilwell. Sycamore had batted first and were all out for 186. Chilwell’s Neil Hambley hit 90 as they honed in on victory until Beck struck, taking 4/27; Chilwell finished 26 runs short.

Long Whatton top the table after one completed game beating Gedling Sherwood II (83) for a 9 wicket victory.  Andrew Shaw (6/23) turned Farndon around after last weekend’s annihilation away at Ravenshead, to win by 61 runs at Whatton Aslockton. Edingley have struggled so far this season and faired no better away at Snibston Grange. Batting first, they could only muster 84 runs and then were run ragged in the field as Snibston romped home to victory in only 15 overs.

Kinoulton’s Steve Harling hit 91 as Kinoulton finally showed their form beating Nottingham (217), by 7 wickets.  Matthew Buckley (5/35 and 72*) was the hero as Eastwood Town II beat Gotham II by 9 wickets. Cotgrave (103), were well beaten away at East Leake (161/7).  However, Cotgrave’s Tony Newby 1/6, did his best to hold back the score as his 10 overs contained a staggering 9 maidens.

There were a couple of high scoring performances as first, Lowdham’s Chris Wright (84) took Lowdham to 178, only to see Epperstone’s Neil Pankhurst (96*) steer his side home by 3 wickets. If your name was Murray then you were in for a good day at Attenborough III at home to Shepshed town III. Tom (66) and Ian (45*) guided  the home side to 248/7 and then Eddie Murray took 3/41 as they beat Shepshed by 94 runs.

Adam Clapton (Shepshed) and Adam James (Attenborough) both hit 78. Carrington Cavaliers (71) slumped to another poor defeat at home as they were again dismissed cheaply, this time by Sawley Long Eaton Park III (74/5) with Neil Moulds (6/29) starring.  Kev Smith( 93*) and 15 year old Owen Leddie (4/24) were the major factors in West Bridgfordians II’s win over Stoke Bardolph (151).

Stu Dickinson had a day to remember as first he hit 47 of Bingham’s impressive 194. He then turned bowling hero taking 7/6 as Chilwell II were humbled to 30 all out.  Basford Hall Old Boys (208/3) dominated the clash with Gedling & Sherwood III (122), as Richard Kelley top scored with 90.

Lambley II (149/2) got in the winning mood as Nick Shaw blasted his way to 82* to overtake Awsworth II’s 148/9. Mark Wallbank (6/33) could not quite turn match winner for Wilsons II (161/9) as Stanton made it 3 wins from 3 but were thankful to captain Tom Henshaw (45*) steering the tail to win by 1 wicket. Another captain doing well is Anthony Beestal of Hucknall III, he took 6/14.

Dennis Wright, the league’s press secretary, turned in a personnel best 83* away at Nottingham III. He and Dileepa De Silva (42) put on 112 for the first wicket as Toton 203/3, posted their highest score for three years. Nottingham were bowled out for 100, with Tim Brealey taking 4/20.  Steve Atherton’s 6/26 saw Kimberley Institute IV maintain top spot beating Edingley II (148) by 2 wickets. 14 year old Grant Newcombe took 4/8 and two superb diving catches on his league debut as Thrumpton III beat Lowdham II
