Staggering Wright hits second best individual score
by Dennis Wright, 26th July 2004

The 2nd highest individual league score was plundered by Chris Wright of Lowdham, who hit a staggering 231* at home to Gotham Village, with Jim Blacknell (66) they put on 214 for the first wicket. Although Wright missed out on the overall record, Ellerslie II managed to hit the biggest team score of 398/5 with Richard Renwick hitting 198, the team scored at a massive 8.8 runs an over.

Another Ellerslie player in the runs was Sam Catsharma who hit 162. There were few bowling performances as the batsman dominated, however Farndon II’s 15 year old Andrew Staszkiewiez (6/13) left the opposition struggling as much with his name as his bowling.

The most amazing finish in the league’s history came in the C/D clash between Kimberley Institute (167/9) and Attenborough II (166/9). Attenborough had moved to within 7 runs of victory with an over to go. With 5 runs off the 1st 3balls of Steve Bennett’s over Kimberley must have felt all was lost but then came three wicket taking balls as the pressure proved too much for Attenborough as they crumbled to an amazing hat-trick.

Plumtree III overcame their toughest challenge as they defeated 2nd placed Clifton Village III to maintain a 100% record. However Plumtree, undefeated in division A for much of the season, have now suffered back to back defeats and are locked in a three way battle with Gedling Colliery and Long Eaton for the Premiership place that seemed theirs only a few weeks ago. Gedling Colliery completed their victory having dismissed Newstead Abbey Village (136) and then knocked off the required runs for the loss of 1 wicket.

Rolls Royce (122) suffered a surprise defeat as Loughborough Carillon (124/2) eased any relegation worries that may have crept into recent results. Attenborough continued their upturn in form as they racked up 193/8 and restricted Plumtree to a mere 94. Long Eaton (166/3) kept their hopes alive as they easily chased Radcliffe on Trent’s 162/9. In the final game there was an easy victory for Eastwood Town (226/7) over Balderton (114).

Division B leaders Gedling & Sherwood (139) suffered a set back, and relinquished the lead, when they lost to 3rd placed Gotham Village (160/9). With Ellerslie (267/7) beating Newark (126), they moved to the top spot. Nottingham (148/7) suffered a defeat to Belvoir (149/6) and Thurgarton (129) lost to Hucknall (130/7) pushing both deep into relegation trouble. Bottesford (145/2), along with Hucknall, eased their own relegation worries with a win at home to Bramcote (144/8).

Plumtree II have continued to hold top spot in Division C as they beat Radcliffe II (163) by 52 runs. West Bridgfordians (136/2) hold 2nd place after beating Kirkby Portland (133), but Clifton Village (262/4) beating Risley (198) and Wilsons (198/8), after their win at home to Hickling (98), are well in the promotion hunt. Awsworth’s (164/7) win over Nuthall (160) probably means survival for one and relegation for the other. There was controversy in the fixture between Beeston and Willoughby as Beeston broke all league rules by calling off the first team game in favour of the 2nd XI fixture.

At the top of E/F Lady Bay Boots (189/7) marched on with a win at home to Underwood (185/6), leaving the league with a dilemma as both Boots side could be placed in the same division next season. With Gedling Colliery II (136) losing to Hucknall II (197/7) the fight for the 2nd promotion place is between 4 teams. Long Whatton (220/9) hold that spot at the moment as they returned to winning ways at Ravenshead (191). Chilwell boosted their survival hopes with a 10 wicket victory at home to fellow strugglers Ruddington (90).

In G/H, Ellerslie II’s mighty 398/5, pushed Stanton by Dale (154/8) to defeat and deep into relegation worries. At the top Calverton II (175/6) forged ahead with another win away at East Bridgford (174). Eastwood Town II (185/2) passed Edingley’s total (184/6) with ease to hold 2nd promotion place but Snibston Grange (238/5) are tight on the tail having beaten relegation threatened Kinoulton (149/9).

Rolls Royce II’s (185/1) ,M Carden (114*) steered his side further clear of the opposition with a win over Kirkby Portland (184/7). 3rd placed Caunton (175/8) lost to 2nd place Rainworth (180/6) whilst Martin Widdowson hit 87 as Gladstone (158) stayed in touch after beating Newark II (103/9). Thurgarton III’s batsmen

Tony Downy (44) and Trevor Vennett-Smith (60) posted their 4th 100+ opening partnership of the season as they beat Shepshed Town IV (39) by 101 runs to maintain top spot in Division R. Toton Sycamore II’s wicket-keeper batsman, Peter Manning, hit his 3rd half century in 4 games but has failed to be on a winning side as again Toton (139) lost at home to 2nd place Gedling Colliery III (143/4).
