Four points seperate top four in intriguing battle
by David Bell, 17th August 2004

The challenge for the Division One title remains as intriguing as ever with just four points separating the top four sides. De La Salle stay at the top by just two points following defeat away at fellow contenders and defending champions Hundall. Hundall were bowled out for a competitive 189 (Pursehouse 83, Wainwright 4-74, Heath 5-63). In reply, the leaders were humbled for only 83.

Second placed Old Edwardians / Collegiate came out winners in a low scoring affair against struggling University Staff. Old Eds were dismissed for 104 (Dave Needham 4-43, Maqsood 4-23) but skittled Staff for just 43 (Chris Street 7-15). Making the fourth part of the equation are Sheffield Works Department. They bowled out Hathersage for 121 and eased to a six wicket win (Richard Everett 52). Bottom side Baslow claimed their second win of the season but still find themselves relegated. They restricted Centralians to 125-8 (Ryalls 4-26) and gained a comfortable seven wicket win (Madina 54 no). However, with only four games remaining, they cannot gain enough points to get out of the bottom two.

Parkhead were dismissed for 132 (Wardley 5-28) by Holmesfield, who finished on exactly the same score with one wicket in hand as the game ended in a tie (Jimmy Pearson 46). Ashford consolidated their mid-table position with 162-7 (Julian Henson 44, Dave Rosling 4-73) at home to Stanton, who attained the draw at 102-6.

Calver are promoted to Division One. The heavy rain of the previous week meant their game against SWD II was abandoned, giving them just enough points to secure promotion. Two games remain to settle the Division Two championship and the remaining promotion position. Chesterfield Barbarians compiled 186-7 (K.Marriott 59, J.Wall 49, R.Bingley 4-51) and then rolled over visitors Grindleford for 58. They are level on points with Stocksbridge I, who went down to defeat against Parkhead II. Parkhead were bowled out for 166 (Burnett 41, Hibbert 4-51) and managed to curtail the Stocksbridge innings with the score on 140.

Stocksbridge second eleven join Hathersage II in Division Three next season. They bowled Millhouses out for 167 (S.Hussain 55, A.Rolfe 4-35, M.Wingfield 4-44) but could only manage 103-6 (R.Kenny 59) in reply. Hathersage II capped a difficult season by being bowled out for 27 (Peach 7-8) by Bakewell, who were comfortable eight wicket winners.

Dronfield Woodhouse have opened up a thirteen point lead at the top of Division Three. They skittled Calow for 54 and gained a nine wicket success. Clash of the day came at Davy Sports where Laycocks and Centralians II swapped places in the table. Laycocks declared at 216-3 (Roger Wainwright 105 no, Jamie Jewitt 56 no) but were leapfrogged by Cents, who replied with 217-7 (Chatterton 40, Rhodes 97).

Old Edwardians / Collegiate II fell victim to another waterlogged ground against already-relegated University Staff II. They are now battling against Calow to avoid the drop to Division Four. Richland Wanderers were restricted to 105-9 (Paul Ramsdale 4-47) by BT Pensions / AGD, who gained a four wicket win (Mark Hayes 42, Mick Pashley 6-32).

Ridgeway continue to lead Division Four. They bowled Great Longstone out for 51 and claimed a seven wicket win. Three points behind are Transport. Trevor Fox (4-18) saw BT Pensions / AGD II dismissed for 107 and Abdul Kadir (77 no) guided Transport home with eight men to spare. Third placed Millhouses II rattled up 203-3 (Sanderson 103 no, Dunkley 70) and turned over Stocksbridge III for 62 (Azhar 5-13). Baslow II were restricted to 125-5 (Steve Lee 42), which was surpassed by Zingari with five men down (Makkar 43 no). Dronfield Sports against Chesterfield Barbarians II also fell victim to the wet weather.
