Hundall back in the driving seat Defending champions Hundall are in the driving seat once again as the Bank Holiday weekend threw up another set of fascinating results in Division One. On Saturday, they bowled fellow contenders Old Edwardians / Collegiate out for 104 (Barrie Cox 6-32) and raced to an eight wicket win. They followed this up on Monday by restricting Centralians to 158-7 (Dan Stow 40) and claiming a seven wicket triumph (Graeme Badcock 50 no). Twenty five points from their remaining two games will see them take a seventh successive title. Twelve points behind Hundall, but with only one game left to play, are Sheffield Works Department. They gained a comfortable eight wicket win on Saturday after bowling Baslow out for just 63 (Brad Sampson 6-29). Game of the day on Monday saw Works close on 188-9, despite an unbeaten Richard Everitt century, in pursuit of long time leaders De La Salle's 220-3 declared. De La Salle also have only one fixture remaining and are a single point behind Works. They could only post 139-8 at mid-table Stanton, who ran out seven wicket winners on Saturday. The final side still in contention are Old Edwardians / Collegiate. After defeat at Hundall, they bounced back on Monday to register 192-9 (Richards 71) against Hathersage, who were skittled for just 77 (Street 7-27). September 11th sees Hundall travel to Old Eds in what could be a potential title decider. At the foot of the table, Centralians and University Staff are battling it out for the final relegation place and face each other in a vital clash on Saturday. Staff began the weekend by restricting Parkhead to 141-5 but could only muster 87-8 in reply. They fared better on Monday by compiling 148-9 and bowling Holmesfield out for 90. Holmesfield made an impressive 259-9 (J.Pearson 77, A.Robertson 51, T.Lumb 49) against Cents on Saturday, who held out at 142-9 (M.Scholey 48, J.Pearson 5-42). The remaining games saw Ashford make 143-9 (N.Somerton 4-40) against Hathersage, who replied with 113-9 (P.Campbell 51). Stanton bowled Parkhead out for 66 (Dave Rosling 5-29) and claimed a ten wicket victory (Dave Hadfield 41 no). On Monday, Ashford were bowled out for 134 (Paulett 51, Hadfield 4-46) by Baslow, who won by four wickets (Madina 43). Chesterfield Barbarians follow Division Two champions Calver into Division One next season. They ran up 176-9 (K.Marriott 76, P.Fearn 5-53) at home to Bakewell, who were subsequently dismissed for 94 (Paul Sharman 4-8). That result meant disappointment for Stocksbridge I, who fell short of the promotion places despite victory against SWD II. Stocksbridge were bowled out for 141 (D.Sampson 4-24) but rallied to bowl Works out for 103 (D.Codd 6-28). Millhouses posted 197-6 (Bailey 56 no) but saw Parkhead II close on 157-6 (Warwick 47). Hathersage II rounded off a miserable season by being bowled out for 40 by Grindleford, who claimed a ten wicket win.
Centralians II secured the final promotion place in Division Three with victory over BT Pensions / AGD. Pensions were restricted to 123-8, which Cents passed with a similar number of wickets down (Calvert 4-29). It all went badly wrong for Centralians' promotion rivals Laycocks. They were bowled out for 54 (Paul Lally 5-41, Tom Wainwright 4-13) by De La Salle II, who gained a five wicket win. Dronfield Woodhouse confirmed their Division Three championship with a massive 351 runs (Alan Parker 100, David Drew 120, Chris Sanders 54) against relegated University Staff II, who could only manage 50 in reply. Joining Staff in Division Four will be Old Edwardians / Collegiate II, who suffered a sixth no result match against Calow due to a waterlogged ground. Richland Wanderers compiled a healthy 182-6 (Kevin Tann 107, John Needham 49) against Hundall II, who were dismissed for 125 despite a battling 55 not out from Bob Purshouse. Ridgeway face an anxious wait to see if they are to be crowned as Division Four champions. A productive weekend saw them declare on 182-6 (P.Burke 67 no) and bowl BT Pensions / AGD II out for 38 (K.Roberts 5-10). On Monday, they restricted Baslow II to 142-5 (S.Lee 46) and achieved an eight wicket success (G.Woodhead 88 no) as well as promotion to boot. Also in pursuit of the title are Transport. They sent back Baslow II for just 66 (Garth Lewis 7-27) and claimed a nine wicket win on Saturday. Lewis capped a fine weekend by taking 4-31 to dismiss Chesterfield Barbarians II for 100 on Monday as Transport secured the win with four men in hand and gained their promotion spot. The game between Millhouses II and Transport will see if Transport get the eight points they need to be crowned champions. Millhouses II fell agonisingly short of the promotion places. On Saturday, they rattled up 200-7 (Ludlam 70 no) and bowled Zingari out for just 85 (Searle 4-20). However, their hopes were scuppered on Monday when BT Pensions / AGD II bowled them out for 98 (Azhar 47, Endersby 4-19) and gained a four wicket win (Heaven 4-29). Stocksbridge III figured in two close games over the weekend. They posted 153-8 (Derek Redwood 54 no, Julian Wall 4-27) against Chesterfield Barbarians II on Saturday and managed to bowl out the visitors for 147 (Julian Wall 61, Rob Daley 7-50). On Monday, they were bowled out for 166 (Ward 73, Siddall 42, Mantell 5-55, Bell 4-46) by Great Longstone, who tumbled five runs short of the total (Nicholas 45).
