Mansfield League crash in semi final
by Godfrey Kerry / Alan Rowley, 15th August 2005

The Mansfield League's splendid run in the National League Trophy came to an end as they lost to the Derbyshire County League in the semi-final. This is the first time Mansfield has entered the competition, and with excellent wins over the Durham Senior and Bassetlaw Leagues it has been an outstanding success for the players and the League. The superb run in the competition has raised the profile of the Mansfield League and the committee has given the backing to re-enter the competition next year.

The effects of Saturday's rain made the toss important as water had leak under the covers. The toss was won by Derby’s captain Steve Attenborough (Spondon CC) who asked the Mansfield skipper Darren Walker (Mansfield CC) to bat.

The home side made a good start considering the conditions before Will Butler (Sherwood CC) was adjudged caught behind by David Hartley (Matlock CC) off the bowling of the Derby skipper. The innings progressed until the18th over and then Adam Burgess was caught at square leg off the bowling of Paul Cook (Spondon CC). Mansfield wickets then continued to fall with only Jamie Jevons (Welbeck CC) finishing in double figures with 27. The home side finished on 101 in the 37th over with all the Derby bowlers performing well, especially Spondon's Joe Ashdown who netted figures of 3 for 5.

The County League found it a struggle to score runs, the only exception being Matt Lineker (Alfreton) who made a match winning 56 before being stumped by David Hunt (Welbeck CC) off the bowling of Paul Gurnell (Cuckney CC).
