Collaroy clobber 'the follow on' in epic encounter
by Alan Rowley, 16th July 2005

With the Ashes series now less than a week away, the club cricketers of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire got the chance to play in their own Ashes game when the tourists from Collaroy Plateau Cricket Club in Sydney, faced 'the follow on' XI at Kimberley Institute Cricket Club. In an epic encounter played in the best of spirits, the tourists came out top in a game which yielded 541 runs.

Skippers Adams and HuxleyThe tourists took first knock on another glorious day which has been a feature of the Midlands section of their England tour. Openers Col Huxley and Bruce Flint set off at lightning speed, despatching opening bowlers John McCollum (Cutthorpe) and Jamie Rowley (Langley Mill United) to all parts.

The first eight overs produced 44 runs before McCollum was replaced by Liam Conway (Selston Town), but still the runs flowed. Flint raced to his fifty and the Collaroy total passed the 150 mark with all wickets intact.

The introduction of James Franco (Marehay) and Andy Stovell (Wollaton) added some variety to the attack, and it was Stovell who claimed the first wicket, bowling Huxley for 45. Flint, meanwhile, continued the onslaught as he reached his ton before he edged one to keeper Dave Buckley (Marehay), off Stovell, with his score on exactly 100. Flint's innings included 14 fours and 3 sixes.

Umpires Sid and PaulRob Minnett, who had the honour of scoring the club's first international century against Edwinstowe, continued where Flint left off. Brendan Ball didn't last long before Stovell had him caught and bowled, and the Wollaton player was again in the thick of the action catching Peter Henriksen off Conway for 13.

Franco picked up the fifth wicket to fall, having Greg Luckman caught by skipper Richard Adams (Kimberley Institute) for 17. Despite seeing his partners disappear, Minnett continued to stroke the ball gloriously in a chanceless fifty. Stovell struck again in the final over of the innings removing James Scholtens caught and bowled for 29.

When the 40th over was reached, the tourists were on 289 for 6, with Minnett undefeated on 62. Pick of the bowlers was Stovell with 4 for 36.

A rare treat followed for the tourists at tea as the Millers ladies were drafted in to provide the catering. Nikki, Louise and Dawn did a magnificent job and the Aussies had no hesitation in declaring the teas to be the best on the tour so far. A superb achievement!

The Millers girlsWith a huge score to chase, 'the follow on' boys were hoping that the notorious Kimberley hill would catch a few of the fielders out. Chris Plant (Bolsover Colliery) and Buckley opened the batting and started off briskly, putting 44 on the board before Buckley was caught by Scholtens off Toby Horstead for 22. Dennis Wright (Toton Sycamore) only lasted two balls before getting caught by Luckman off Scholtens for a duck.

At 44 for 2, the home side were in some trouble, but Plant and Adam Harchuk (Heanor Town) settled into a rhythm, moving the score on to 85 before Harchuk was judged to be leg before off Michael Rohanek for 19. At 97, Plant's fine innings came to an end when Luke Ireland had him caught by Huxley for 41.

Adams and Stovell took 'the follow on' passed the hundred before Adams went, caught by Scholtens off Rohanek for 29. Stovell was then joined by big hitting McCollum, and the two put on a fifty partnership in quick time. McCollum was particularly destructive, hammering 7 fours in an innings of 40. Stovell was bowled by Ball for 20 and when McCollum went for one big hit too many and was bowled by Dean Storey, the home side were on the ropes at 184 for 7.

Rowley, making his 'follow on' debut laid into the Aussie bowlers hammering a career best 37 in a stand of 46 with a cautious Gary Edginton (Stanton & Awsworth Elks). Rowley finally fell to Storey, his total including 5 fours and 2 sixes.

A sporting Edginton retired to give Conway the chance to have a bat, but Conway couldn't take advantage of the gesture, falling to Flint without scoring. It was left to Edginton and Franco to see out the remaining balls to take 'the follow on' XI through to 252 for 9, 37 short of the Aussies total.

After the match, the Aussies presented awards to the Kimberley club, the Langley Mill tea ladies and man of the match Andy Stovell. Richard Adams presented team manager John Jackson with a 'follow on' shirt, autographed by all the players, which will hopefully find its way to the club's pavilion in Sydney.

The Aussie custom of finishing the game with a 'boat race' rounded off an awesome day. A drinking contest involving a team of five, the 'boat race' was narrowly won by the Aussies to give them a memorable 2-0 victory on the day.

After the game, some of the tourists made their way to Rolls Royce Leisure Centre in Hucknall to see former umpire Dickie Bird give an entertaining speech. The Aussies were delighted to get the opportunity to meet the greatest umpire the game has ever seen and to have their photographs taken with him. They are bound to take some unforgettable memories back home.

Finally, thanks must go to Kimberley Institute Cricket Club, umpire Paul Barker, scorer Stephen Dockrell, Simon Widdison for organising the shirts and the tea ladies for making the day so special. Everyone agreed it was a tremendous day and all now look forward to the next game at Gotham on July 24th.
