Clulow the star in massive Attenborough total
by the SNCL Press Team, 6th June 2005

Sam Clulow was star of the show for Attenborough as they built a massive 311 for 7 in their 48 overs against Ellerslie (117/9) in Division A of the Gunn & Moore South Notts Cricket League. The all-rounder hit a whirlwind 168 and then took 3/41 to help secure a colossal winning draw. Andy Edge’s 85 kept leaders Long Eaton (230/5) on top with a 78 run win over lowly Gotham Village.

Setting the pace in B are Radcliffe-On-Trent and they humiliated struggling Belvoir by 10 wickets, bowling out the 9 man visitors for a paltry 34. Bottesford moved up to 2 nd with a home success over Plumtree II. Richard Howett (53* and 4/38) effecting a 7 wicket win.

In C there was yet another win for leaders West Bridgfordians and Thrumpton also won to keep up the pressure in 2 nd with a 5 wicket triumph over Radcliffe II whilst Kirkby Portland slipped up at Kimberley Institute II. James Griffith (73) and Martin Clarke (54) setting up a 22 run win for Kimberley .

West Indian Caribs (224/5) chalked up yet another win also, this time against bottom side Wollaton II (186/9) in Division D. Meanwhile Attenborough second’s remained second with a comprehensive 9 wicket demolition of Risley whom they dismissed for just 51.

Long Eaton II continued to dominate Division E, racking up 162/9 away at Nuthall and bowling the home side out for 58. Lady Bay Boots II and Wymeswold were also out for below 100, scoring 83 and 87 against Farndon (118) and Gedling Colliery II (236/4) respectively. 14 year old Josh Bolus had a good day for Collingham II, scoring 60 and taking 3/21 against Hucknall II but unfortunately rain washed out any chance of a result. Stanton & Awsworth Elks’ (187/3) Richard Barnes (87) helped his team to victory over Willoughby on the Wolds (186/8).

There was a reversal of fortune in Division F. As visitors Ravenshead posed for their team photo before the match, skipper Julian Tadd told his team “remember lads we’re top of the division”. However, heads soon dropped in the field as bottom of the table Toton’s opening four showed resistance to Ravenshead’s bowling attack. The Toton innings finished on 159/6. Tight bowling and a couple of run outs left Ravenshead way adrift on 116/9. Underwood (234/4) continued their unbeaten run as Chris Briggs (84) and Andy Freeman (55*) helped set up victory against Beeston (150). Whatton and Aslockton (139/9) finished 10 short chasing Notts Unity Casuals II score of 149/9.

In Division G all sympathies had to be with Ellerslie II’s Todd Mills who was stranded on 97* as his side overhauled Bestwood Village’s total of 153. Team mates James Vivyan (5/55) and Sarmad Masud (4/30) had already done the damage with the ball.

There was no change at the top in Division K with both Hoveringham and Kirkby Portland Seconds recording easy victories. Oxton put last week’s disappointing defeat behind them as Michael Berry (54 and 2 for 11) turned in another fine all round performance in their defeat of struggling Risley II. After four consecutive defeats, things are looking much brighter for Loughborough Carillion as they gained their second victory on the bounce, this time over Stapleford.

Ian Hutchinson (45) was again in the runs as they overcame the visitors’ total of 121 with 4 wickets to spare. It’s proving to be a tough season again for Stanton by Dale II who were relegated in 2004. They managed to restrict Newark to 138 but 15 year old Harry Atkinson shone with the ball with 4 for 19 as the visitors could only manage 84 in reply. Newark now move into fourth.

It’s as you were in Division K with Newstead and Lenton Abbey both winning, the latter against previously third Bingham. Lenton set the home side a daunting challenge of 240 for victory but all credit to Lambley who made a real fight before falling 20 runs short. Sutton Bonington (217/5) move into third with a comfortable victory over Belvior (117/5), Gordon Fuller (75*) and the consistent Dave Appleby (47) in the runs for the victors. There was relief for Carrington Cavaliers with their first victory of the season over fellow strugglers Nottingham Victoria. Despite another fine bowling performance from Victoria ’s Suny Bhattal (4 for 30), Cavaliers knocked off the required 167 with two wickets remaining ,thanks in part to Irvin Khalid’s 51.

The top of the table clash in division L lived up to its billing as Breaston changed places with West Bridgfordians seconds as they squeezed past the home side’s 126 with two wickets in hand, veteran Mick Taylors’ performance of 6 for 18 proving to be in vain. Previously not much has been heard of Bingham’s overseas star Stu Dickinson, but he burst into life on Saturday with figures of 7 for 11 as Old Paviors II were skittled out for 55.

The match of the day, however, was at Belton where the home side chasing Thrumpton II’s 170 were down and out at 116 for 9, however enter Tom Orrill and Robert Ward whose last wicket stand meant Belton required 10 runs off the final over for a remarkable victory. Sadly Ward was run out on the penultimate delivery leaving the home side two runs short and Orrill unbeaten on 46 to add to his earlier three wicket haul. For the visitors Dave Poppleton (73 and 4 for 57) produced a man of the match performance. Congratulations also go to Shepshed III who gained their first victory of the season over Flintham. The visitors’ stars were Andy Clayton (89) and then Brian Smith who must wish he could break his arm every week as this was his second consecutive five wicket haul since returning from injury.

In M, Newstead Abbey Village III (192/5) with Graham Bullock 51*, Robin Bullock 42 and Richard Misere 49* lost a close game against Balderton II (193/8) Sam Ross 65. An all-round performance by Scott Law (81 & 4/8) assisted Stanton Awsworth Elks II (237/8) to an easy victory over Willoughby II (116). Shaun King scored 138 in Caythorpe IV's total of 245/7 against Snibston Grange II (88).  The ages of rest of the Caythorpe side ranged between 13 and 17. Another youngster, 17 year old Luke Gunn with 109 was the star for Clifton Village III (286/5) in their win over Whatton & Aslockton II (165). Long Whatton II (230/5) made light work of Plumtree III (104/9) with Mark Taylor and Matt Trigg scoring half centuries.

In Division P, a 2nd wicket partnership of 197 between 17 year old Joe Hewitt with 108* and 15 year old Ryan Eason with 101 was the highlight of Gedling Colliery III (236/6) massive victory over another young Kimberley Institute IV (91). 16 year old Eddie George with 49* and 44 from Nev Hooper saw Ellerslie III (181/9) home by one wicket against Thrumpton III (180/9). Beeston II's (99) Mohammed Azam took 6/13 in their narrow win over Cotgrave II (82). In R, the two top teams Lowdham II (234/7) and Toton Sycamore II (164/7) cemented their positions with wins over West Bridgford Legion II (198/9) and Edingley II (163/8) respectively.
