Purshouse has Transport tumbling
by David Bell, 9th May 2005

Hundall II's Bob Purshouse put up an early contender for bowling performance of the season by taking 9-22 to send his side to victory in Division Three against Sheffield Transport. Hundall posted a typically meagre early season total of 83-7 in the face of some fine pace bowling from Garth Lewis (5-29). Not to be outdone, Purshouse used his guile to send Transport tumbling for just 54.

League newcomers Sheepbridge continue to set the early pace in the division. They bowled Millhouses II out for just 63 (Andrew Hulett 4-4) and claimed a nine wicket success. The trend of low scores continued at Stand Road where visitors De La Salle II were bowled out for 87 (Mark Wilmott 4-42). However, home club Richland Wanderers could only muster 74 in reply with skipper Andy Tann carrying his bat for 46 no.

Ridgeway posted an impressive 217-8 (G.Woodhead 53, R.Ludlam 42, K.Roberts 58) at home to Coal Aston, who replied with 173-3 (Sanderson 83, Marpole 54). Collegiate were dismissed for 127 away at University Staff II, who reached victory thanks to Dave Needham (55) and Keiron Foster (49). Parkhead are the early front runners in Division One. They bowled out Holmesfield for 126 (David Ward 62) and gained a seven wicket win thanks to Ed Bowers (51). Hathersage provided a shock by beating last year's long time leaders De La Salle. They gained a six wicket win after the Beauchief-based side were skittled for just 73.

Hundall made the highest total of the day, 259-8 at home to Chesterfield Barbarians. Stephen Bayston (112) and Captain Neil Vaughan (68) were the mainstays of the innings with Paul Daniels claiming 4-87 for the Barbs. John Hughes (4-20) saw the Barbs back in the pavilion for 92. The games at Ashford, Stanton and Calver all fell victim to the weather.

SWD II have taken an early lead in the Second Division. They compiled 195-6 at home to Dronfield Woodhouse thanks to John Woods (85) and Neil Rhodes (45). Woodhouse could only manage 51 in reply with Rafique Khan taking 4-13. Bowlers reigned supreme at Parkhead where the home side were dismissed for 129 (Azhar Khan 5-25). Millhouses came agonisingly close but were eventually bowled out for 120 with Ian Spilman taking 6-16.

A fine contest at Niagara saw Stocksbridge II register 160-7 (A.Perry 41, M.Perry 54, S.Webb 4-24) against Centralians II, who crept past the winning post with one wicket to spare (S.Webb 51 no, B.Kenny 4-63). Stocksbridge first fared better by bowling Bakewell out for 110 (Clive Hutton 4-20) and gaining a four wicket win (Craig Allen 40). Games at Grindleford and Hathersage also fell foul of the early morning downpours.

There were mixed fortunes for the league newcomers in Division Four. Hallam were able to allow themselves the luxury of declaring on 199-7 (Clarke 70) on their travels at Chesterfield Barbarians II, who could only manage 58 in reply. Fellow newcomers Richland Wanderers II didn't fare so well despite posting 178-5 at Baslow II, with Paul Fletcher carrying his bat for 102 no. Andy Elleker followed suit with 104 no for Baslow as they registered an eight wicket victory. The game between Zingari and Walkley was lost to the weather.
