Stocksbridge break free
by David Bell, 12th July 2005

Stocksbridge broke free of their nearest rivals to head Division Two by a clear margin. Saturday's top of the table clash saw University Staff despatched for 110. James Spawton (45no) then saw the men from Bracken Moor home by eight wickets.

In the chasing pack, Millhouses were dismissed for 161 (Adeel 72, Walker 4-33, Nittala 4-15) but rallied to bowl Centralians II out for just 77 (Sohail Mumtaz 5-34). Also in the frame are Bakewell. They were bowled out by Hathersage II for 141 (J.Madin 41, J.Watson 6-33). Hathersage could only manage 67 in reply (P.Fearn 5-34, R.Peach 4-27). Moving up the table are Baslow. They curtailed the Parkhead II innings with the score on 207 (V.Gopal 51, T.Gillott 41, T.Taylor 5-50). A two wicket success came in the reply (M.Taylor 90no).

David Drew (5-46) and the evergreen John Bridgett (4-13) combined to bowl Grindleford out for 113 after their Dronfield Woodhouse side had earlier posted 153-8. Bottom side Stocksbridge II registered a competitive 185-7 (Bob Kenny 83, Rittu Ghose 4-52) but still lost out by three wickets to SWD II for whom Dan Franklin remained unbeaten on 113.

A blank weekend for leaders SWD meant the teams in pursuit were trying to claw back some ground in Division One. It wasn't to be for Parkhead, however. They managed to bowl De La Salle out for 162 (Joe Salvadori 43, Ian Davies 4-33) but crumbled to 62 all out due to a devastating spell from Sam Wainwright (7-22). Defending champions Hundall have a lot to do if they are to retain their title. They visited Hathersage where the home side compiled 204-9 (Phil Burnip 72, Ben Furniss 43, Dean Woodcock 5-55). In reply, Hundall were all out for 167 (Tim Oldman 65, Eugene Henderson 5-7).

Highest scorers of the day were Holmesfield with 282-7 (Jimmy Pearson 117no, Rick Turner 49). Peter Westwood (5-55) saw Centralians back in the pavilion for 135. Calver posted 177 (Doug Howie 53, Paul Daniels 4-40, Martin Roberts 4-45) against bottom club Chesterfield Barbarians, who again crumbled for just 53 (Stuart Hallows 8-14). Stanton were bowled out for 176 (Gladwin 117, Lomas 6-33) and survived a tight finish as Collegiate were in turn dismissed for 172 (Neylon 94, Clark 4-36, Hadfield 4-49).

De La Salle II march on at the top of Division Three. Nick Howard (5-26) and Tom Wainwright (5-39) combined to bowl Transport out for just 76. This allowed the leaders to claim a four wicket win. Still on their trail, with a game in hand, are Sheepbridge. They were dismissed for exactly 200 (Andrew Hulett 93, Peter Burke 5-37) by Ridgeway, who fell just short on 180 (Kevin Roberts 77, Andrew Hulett 4-36).

Also with a game in hand are third placed Richland Wanderers. They bowled Collegiate out for 76 (Dave Whiteley 4-33) and were led to victory by skipper Andy Tann (46no). Hundall II were sent back for 125, which allowed Millhouses II to a five wicket success. Struggling University Staff II were dismissed for 105 by Coal Aston, who gained a convincing nine wicket win (Matt Sanderson 53no).

Walkley lead Division Four by a fifty point margin. They skittled Baslow II for 82 (Wayne Shore 5-21, Tony Dallman 4-52) and recorded a seven wicket triumph. Sheepbridge II were left to rue the decision to bat first as they made just 97 against Hallam. John Heath (52) led the second placed side home by five wickets. At the foot of the table, Chesterfield Barbarians II posted 173-8 (S.Harris 4-49) and managed to dismiss Stocksbridge III for 159 (R.Elliott 44, N.Smalley 44, D.Dart 4-48).

On Sunday, an experienced Dronfield Sports side knocked up 205-4 and bowled out second bottom Richland Wanderers II for 72. In the remaining Knockout Cup Quarter Final, Hathersage made 147 all out with Ben Furniss scoring 49 and Darren Wood taking 5-9, including the hat-trick. In reply, Hundall were all out for 106.
