Everitt fires Works Department to the top
by David Bell, 17th May 2005

Sheffield Works Department's Richard Everitt fired his side to the top of the Division One table with an outstanding innings of 97 not out at home to Ashford In The Water. The visitors compiled a healthy 170 all out having elected to bat first with skipper Andrew Paulett remaining unbeaten on 66. They were left to rue that decision however, as Everitt and John Woods (63no) powered Works to victory with 3.2 overs to spare.

Previous leaders Parkhead didn't fare so well. They were dismissed for 228 at home to De La Salle, who went on to claim a three wicket success. Defending champions Hundall notched up successive victories by making 169-8 (Russ Parker 59, Joe Woolway 4-24) away at Hathersage, who surrendered for just 53 (John Hughes 5-20).

Sheffield Collegiate restricted Stanton In Peak to 136-7 despite 68 from Dave Hadfield. New Zealander Adam Neylon made 59 as the Abbeydale outfit achieved the win with six wickets in hand. Calver finally got off the mark after three successive abandonments with victory over struggling Chesterfield Barbarians. Calver's innings of 165-8 (Coxhead 45no, Nellis 4-19) was enough to see them to a 48 run triumph. Centralians also managed a first completed fixture with a win over visitors Holmesfield. The away side were sent back for 124 which Cents passed with six men down.

SWD II continue to set the pace in the Second Division. Rittu Ghose claimed 5-19 to see Stocksbridge II back in the pavilion for just 78 and his team to a seven wicket win. It wasn't all doom and gloom for Stocksbridge as their first eleven gained a hard fought win over fancied University Staff. Their 141 all out proved to be enough as Andy Hibbert (6-33) bowled the North Sheffield men to a fourteen run win.

Also in pursuit of the leaders are Baslow. Skipper John Hadfield (5-41) saw Parkhead II all out for 140, despite a battling 48 from Duncan Burnett. Richard Ewing (43no) then guided Baslow home by five wickets. Sohail Mumtaz (52no) steered Millhouses to an impressive 190-7 and then took 3-32 to skittle Centralians II for 85.

Also gaining a first win were Bakewell, who made their way to 143 all out (Chris Haynes 62no, Clive Buckle 4-44). Visitors Hathersage II were subsequently dismissed for 126 with Simon Loseby scoring 60. Dronfield Woodhouse were restricted to 129-8 (Alan Parker 45, John Outram 4-40) at home to Grindleford, who replied with 133-8 (John Bridgett 5-29).

University Staff II claimed a share of the Division Three lead with a comprehensive win over Coal Aston. The University men managed to humble the home side for only 31 (J.Young 4-15, A.Lone 6-9) and chalk up an eight wicket success. Joining them at the top of the table are Hundall II, who compiled a competitive 163-6 against Millhouses II. The visitors were blown away for 113 by Paul Gibson, who produced figures of 8-45.

Also in the ascendancy are Ridgeway, who managed to dismiss league newcomers Sheepbridge for 157 (B.Chambers 73, A.Hulett 40, P.Burke 6-23) and reach a five wicket win (K.Roberts 66). Richland Wanderers registered 149-6 (Andy Tann 42, John Needham 40) against Sheffield Collegiate, who were steered to victory with three wickets in hand by Stuart Johns (52). Transport gained the upper hand with 141 all out at De La Salle, who could only manage 114 in reply.

Baslow II continued their good form with a win over Walkley. David Raw (4-33) saw Walkley all out for 134, which the Division Four leaders passed with six men down (Tony Sadler 67no, Chris Allen 43, Wayne Shore 4-47). There were first wins for Sheepbridge II and Richland Wanderers II. Sheepbridge rallied to bowl Hallam out for 78 after only making 97 themselves in the first innings. Dronfield Sports posted 161-5 (Dave Turner 55, Faisal Raja 55) against Richland, who were led to a four wicket win by Paul Fletcher (76).
