Colossal score keeps Works at the top
by David Bell, 21st June 2005

Sheffield Works maintained their eight point lead at the top of Division One by soundly beating De La Salle. They posted a colossal 292-6 thanks to centurian John Woods (100no) with supporting roles from Marcus Burley (58) and Iain Mallett (43). De La Salle failed to make the fifty per cent required for a solitary batting point, being dismissed for 118 (Brad Sampson 4-17) despite a battling 66 from Sam Wainwright.

Works' nearest rivals are still Parkhead. They compiled a decent 239-5 (Davies 58, Brown 65, Wheatley 45) at home to Calver. Stuart Hallows (107) guided the visitors to within seven runs of victory but Will Forsdyke (8-60) bowled Parkhead to the win. Paddy Campbell (5-7) saw bottom side Chesterfield Barbarians back in the pavilion for just 98. Richard Percival (41) then steered Hathersage to victory and into third position.

The Barbs misery was compounded when they slumped to another defeat on Sunday. De La Salle were allowed the luxury of declaring on 277-1 thanks to centuries from James Hartley (148no) and Sam Wainwright (101no). Mark Simmerson (5-34) spun his side to the win as the Barbs closed on 110.

Collegiate were bowled out for 122 (I.Burns 52, M.Clegg 6-25) by Ashford In The Water, who ran out winners by seven wickets thanks to Mark Kerr (52no) and Paul Carrington (53). Centralians made 190-8 (Baker 48, Cartwright 4-48) at home to Hundall, who reached their target with four men in hand (Dawson 41). Stanton gained valuable points in their fight for survival as they made 155 (Nick Rosling 55, Chris Banks 6-25) away at Holmesfield. Dave Hadfield (5-19) helped dismiss the home side for 104.

Stocksbridge claim a narrow lead in Division Two. They skittled strugglers Hathersage II for just 89 (Chris Kelly 6-33) and gained a six wicket win. Just three points behind are University Staff. They restricted Parkhead II to 159-9 (I.Spilman 49no, D.Needham 4-70) and edged to a three wicket win (T.Samms 46). Millhouses good run continues apace. They posted 188-9 (John Bridgett 5-46) and held Dronfield Woodhouse to 137-6.

Bakewell compiled a healthy 187-9 (Jeff Madin 65, Si Statham 6-57) and demolished an under-par Centralians II team for just 71 (Roy Peach 4-15). Grindleford could only muster 103 (Marshall 6-41) at home to bottom side Stocksbridge II. It proved to be enough, however, as the North Sheffield side replied with just 69 (Bingley 5-25). Early front runners SWD II registered a competent 194-8 (Mark Wagstaff 81no) but were pipped at the post by Baslow, who ran out winners by five wickets (Kirk Jones 49, Bob Herbstritt 44no).

De La Salle II continued their push for promotion from Division Three. They tumbled University Staff II for just 48 (Tom Wainwright 5-20) and romped to a ten wicket triumph. Hundall II interrupted Richland Wanderers four match unbeaten run. Richard Kealey (48) guided his side to 165-8. Adam Shaw (5-45) held his nerve in a close finish to bowl the Wanderers out for 153, despite a battling innings from Mick Pashley (48). Ridgeway got back to winning ways with 195-5 (Geoff Woodhead 72, Lee Keys 43no) after earlier bowling Millhouses out for 191. Collegiate recorded 191-9 (Andy Leiper 60, Dave Ramsden 4-56) away at Coal Aston, who replied with 169-9 (Kevin Smith 49, Chris Timms 47no).

Baslow II have regained the lead of Division Four. They demolished Stocksbridge III for only 59 and subsequently raced home by seven wickets. Walkley claim second place. They dismissed Sheepbridge II for 80 and gained a comfortable eight wicket win. Zingari compiled 143-9 (Dave Turner 4-45) away at Richland Wanderers II, who fell just short in reply at 125 all out (Anoop Soni 5-16). Bottom side Chesterfield Barbarians II made their highest total of the season, 173, thanks to Stuart Barton (103) with Faisal Raja taking 5-30 for Dronfield Sports. Dronfield were bowled out for 104 (G.Mullins 4-23) in reply.
