Two horse race in division three
by David Bell, 28th June 2005

The Division Three title race shows all the makings of being of the 'two horse' variety. A successful weekend sees De La Salle II ahead of Sheepbridge by just three points. On Saturday, the Beauchief based club posted 137-7 and clung on to victory by a mere two runs against Collegiate. Sunday's performance was more devastating as Hundall II were bowled out for 71 (Howard 7-28) and an eight wicket win was claimed (Gill 40 no).

Long time leaders Sheepbridge recorded yet another triumph on Saturday. They bowled Richland Wanderers out for 120 (Mick Pashley 46) and eased to a six wicket win thanks to Gary Whitehead (43no). It wasn't all gloom for Hundall II. They restricted University Staff II to 126 (Joe Young 55) and gained an emphatic ten wicket success (Ian Bayston 61no, Sean Wigfield 49no). Elsewhere, Ridgeway compiled a reasonable 166-7 (Jason McLoughlin 43, Noor Gul 4-42) but lost out by six wickets to Transport (I.Owens 98no).

Business as usual in Division One, where SWD and Parkhead continue to plough a lone furrow at the top. Works made their customary 202-7 (Brad Sampson 56no, Rafique Khan 40no) and saw Calver close out on 167-7 (Tom Hilton 46). Mark Barker (5-19) and Will Forsdyke (4-33) combined to bowl Hathersage out for 99 and allow Parkhead to gain a five wicket win. Third placed Ashford looked to be in trouble having been dismissed for just 95 (Sam Wainwright 5-28, Mark Gayle 4-11) by De La Salle, who in turn succumbed for just 81 (Sean White 40, Michael Clegg 8-33).

Hundall made 208-9 (Nick Rosling 4-56) at Stanton, who were bowled out for 132 (Nick Rosling 77, John Hughes 5-24) in reply. Holmesfield scored a decent 192-8 and recorded a 66 run win over Collegiate. At the lower end of the table, Dan Stow (7-37) saw Chesterfield Barbarians back in the pavilion for 95 and Centralians to a comfortable seven wicket victory.

Stocksbridge head up Division Two with a slight advantage over nearest rivals University Staff. Centralians II went down for just 82, which allowed Stocksbridge to complete a ten wicket success (Stawton 40no). Equally, Staff skittled SWD II for just 84 (Andy Fairburn 5-28, Dave Needham 4-47) and registered a five wicket win. Bakewell's fine run continued despite being bowled out by Dronfield Woodhouse for 158 (David Drew 5-56). Woodhouse could only muster 120-9 in reply, with on-song Roy Peach taking 6-44.

Millhouses good form came to a halt as they were dismissed for 127 (T.Outram 4-41) by Grindleford, who made it home with five men in hand. The bottom two sides had little to cheer about. Matthew Ryalls (64) and Bob Herbstritt (44) guided Baslow to an imposing 217-5 against Stocksbridge II, who were bowled out for 94 in reply (Tom Taylor 5-30). Hathersage II fell for 96 (Ben Furniss 52, Ian Gregory 4-22) but made Parkhead II battle all the way for a single wicket win (Kevn Rowney 6-29).

Walkley claimed top spot in Division Four with a convincing win over former leaders Hallam. Wayne Shore (7-17) obliterated the men from Sandygate for 52, allowing Walkley to gain a six wicket win. Sheepbridge II triumphed in the local derby against Richland Wanderers II. Paul Fletcher (80no) and Chris Julian (52) led the Wanderers to a competitive 151-5. Keith Barrett (74) and David Hulett (50) were equally dominant in reply as Sheepbridge gained the upper hand by seven wickets. Struggling Stocksbridge III gained valuable points by posting 160 against Zingari, who were bowled out in turn for 149. On Sunday, Baslow II compiled 144-8 but went down by two wickets to Dronfield Sports.
