It all goes wrong for Works Department
by David Bell, 31st May 2005

Sheffield Works Department continue to lead the Division One table, but only by the narrowest of margins. Their Bank Holiday weekend started on a high when they compiled a decent 257-7 (Richard Everitt 54, Alan Wake 61) against Centralians. Cents made a valiant effort but eventually closed out on 203-8 (Rob Johnson 51, Bradley Sampson 4-44).

It all went wrong for Works on Bank Holiday Monday despite posting a huge 279-8 (Marcus Burley 51, Iain Mallett 73, Pete Silcock 5-55) away at Holmesfield. The home side replied with 285-8 (Rick Turner 77, Jimmy Pearson 68, David Ward 71, Brad Sampson 5-90) in the highest scoring game this season so far.

Hathersage took a mighty leap up the standings with two convincing wins. On Saturday, they bowled Ashford out for 149 (Paul Carrington 57, Lee Woolway 4-18) and were led to a four wicket success by Paddy Campbell (44). On Monday, they skittled fellow contenders Calver for just 83 and again won by four wickets. Calver's weekend had begun well as Tom Hilton (81) and Doug Howie (41) engineered a four wicket win over De La Salle, who had earlier posted 211-6 (Sean White 71, Ian Hallows 4-38). De La Salle made amends on Monday by bowling Centralians out for 150 (Bob Schofield 43, Tim Hayward 6-38) and racing to a nine wicket triumph (James Hartley 64, Sean White 59).

All round performance of the season so far came from Hundall's Michael Cartwright, who hit an unbeaten 101 in his sides 196-9 at home to Collegiate (J.Lomas 4-60). Cartwright then followed that up with 6-30 as Collegiate were sent back for 126. Collegiate fared better against Chesterfield Barbarians as Matt Root (59) led them to 228-6. Bottom side Barbs replied with 170 (Martin Roberts 47). It was their second defeat of the weekend, having been dismissed for 217 (Chris Banks 5-60) chasing Holmesfield's 268-9 (Rick Turner 90, Jimmy Pearson 75, Craig Bradbury 4-46).

Joining the Barbs at the bottom are Stanton In Peak. They were bowled out for 110 (David Hadfield 46) by Parkhead on Saturday, who gained a seven wicket win (Tony Brown 46, Altaf Junaid 49). Stanton mustered 155 on Monday (Anthony Gladwin 85, Patrick Foster 4-49) but still lost out by nine wickets (Mark Kerr 52no, Andrew Paulett 88no).

There were also mixed fortunes for the leading sides in Division Two over the weekend. Stocksbridge firsts looked impressive on Saturday when registering 224-9 (John Esberger 5-62) and bowling Millhouses out for 138 (Adeel Sarwar 41). They couldn't repeat the feat on Monday as they were bowled out for 73 (Tom Skelton 5-16) by Grindleford, who won by eight wickets. Millhouses were also winners by eight wickets on Monday after Sohail Mumtaz (4-38) had bowled SWD II out for 111. It was a second defeat for Works, who went down by three wickets to Centralians II (Winston Foster 42, Pete Sutton 52, Jason Thompson 4-50) after earlier scoring 152-8 (Neil Rhodes 59no, Si Statham 6-63).

Bakewell scored 145-8 (Jeff Madin 69) at home to Grindleford on Saturday, who were put back in the pavilion for 104 by Roy Peach with impressive figures of 9-36. University Staff got back to winning ways with 205-5 (D.Needham 93, T.Samms 68no) against Baslow. The Derbyshire side could only manage 136 (Buckingham 48) in reply with Needham capping a fine game by taking 7-36.

Baslow put up 109-8 on Monday at Centralians II, who ran out winners with two men to spare (James Rhodes 45, Matthew Ryalls 5-44). Hathersage II triumphed in the battle of the bottom two with 158-6 (Richard Buckton 55no) against Stocksbridge II, who were bowled out for 109 (Kevn Rowney 5-36). It was better news for Stocksbridge seconds on Monday as they knocked up 147-8 (Rolfe 43, Perry 42, Murfin 41) and skittled Dronfield Woodhouse for just 72 (Daley 7-32). On Saturday, Woodhouse compiled 209-8 (Jason Oxley 97no) and bowled Parkhead II out for 153 (Andrew Vinall 55).

The lower divisions were spared the excesses of a double weekend. Sheepbridge head the Division Three table. They restricted Hundall II to 178-5 and crept home by two wickets (Wagstaff 83no). De La Salle II claimed second spot with victory over front runners Ridgeway. The home side posted 150-7 (Burke 45no) which De La Salle passed with three men down (Yeo 44, George 50).

Richland Wanderers recorded a second consecutive win at home to Coal Aston. Aston were dismissed for 127 despite a fine 56 from Matt Sanderson, but lost by five wickets thanks to Kevin Tann (45no). Transport were bowled out for 94 (Joe Young 4-41, Mohammed Maqsood 4-17) but hit back to demolish University Staff II for just 50 (Phil Cotterill 6-19). Gary Bailey (63) led Millhouses II to an impressive 215-7 against Collegiate, who replied with 112 (Dan Searle 6-26, Ray Dewsbury 4-20).

Hallam top the Division Four standings. They were bowled out for 71 but managed to dismiss Baslow II for just 49. Richland Wanderers II made it three on the trot with victory away at Chesterfield Barbarians II. The Barbs made 128-7 (Stuart Barton 55, Dave Whiteley 5-35) which was passed by the Wanderers with just a single wicket intact (Paul Fletcher 62no, Pete Whiteley 43, Brian Cowles 6-18). Walkley posted a substantial 233-7 (John Hudson 48, Michael Wing 43) and saw Stocksbridge III returned for 107 (Wayne Shore 5-33). Zingari surprised leaders Sheepbridge II with 177-8 (Ricki Makkar 79, Glen Bramwell 5-59) and gained an eighty three run win.
