Killamarsh set new record in Mallen tie
by Paul Barker, 23rd June 2006

Mallen Trophy Group Stage

Group D

At Sheffield Road: KILLAMARSH 258 for 0, beat WHITWELL 142 for 8 by 116 runs

AN astonishing batting display by Killamarsh set a new record score for the competition and surely this one will take a hell of a lot of beating. Everything that Whitwell bowled at the Killamarsh batsmen disappeared out of sight as Nilika De Silva and Adam Burgess took total command.

De Silva finished with an amazing unbeaten 151 and Burgess (85) as the runs came at an average at just under 13 per over, which is a fantastic rate of scoring by any standards. One thing that must be certain is that the Whitwell side must have been pleased when it was all over.

In reply Whitwell batted quite respectably and finished on 142 for 8 which represented a good effort considering the circumstances. Alan Draycott made an excellent 33, whilst Chris Hopkinson (2 for 20), Rodney Cook (2 for 33) and Parmindah Mudhar (2 for 25) made sure that Whitwell never threatened the huge target they were facing.

Group D

At Sheffield Road: KIVETON PARK 137 for 9, beat KILLAMARSH 132 for 9 by 5 runs

This was always going to be the match that mattered in Group D and Kiveton were the victors in a hard fought encounter and now go through to the semi-final where they will meet Glapwell. Batting first runs were very much at a premium in this game and a terrific knock of 33 by Ashley Rhodes was absolutely crucial as Kiveton struggled to just 137 for 9. Adam Burgess (3 for 35) and Parmindah Mudhar (2 for 15) were the pick of the Killamarsh attack.

This score proved enough as Killamarsh were tied down by some accurate bowling by Australian Andy Maher (2 for 27) with good support coming once again from Ashley Rhodes. Adam Burgess made 35 against his old club and enjoyed a fine all round match but Kiveton held their nerve the better and with three straight wins, became the first side through to the semis.

Group C

At Park Avenue: GLAPWELL 130 for 6, lost to BOLSOVER 134 for 9 by one wicket.

In an absolute thriller of a match, Bolsover with the last pair at the wicket pulled off a staggering win on the final ball. Matt Hall totally dominated the Glapwell innings with a blistering knock of 65 and he received great support from Rob Davison who made 19. Eddie Grant (2 for 12) was the pick of the Bolsover attack.

In reply Chris Cowley (36), Andy Rogers (35) and a quick-fire 31 by Matt Griffith took Bolsover to the verge of victory. However they were losing wickets at regular intervals and with one ball left it was despatched to the fence to give Bolsover a stunning one wicket win. Iain O’Brien with 2 for 14 was the pick of the Glapwell attack but they now need to wait to see if they go through to the semis!

Group C

At Recreation Ground: BOLSOVER 185 for 5, lost to CUTTHORPE 187 for 0 by ten wickets

A staggering performance by Cutthorpe gave them their only win in this year’s competition and guaranteed Glapwell go through to the semi-finals. Batting first, Bolsover could do no more as they reached a highly competitive total of 185 for 5 which averages at 9.25 runs per over which is good going by anybody’s standards.

Mark Bull (59) and Matt Griffith (43) were the two batsmen in form as Cutthorpe’s attack suffered under a tremendous onslaught.

However it was nowhere near enough as Matt Cluer with a brilliant unbeaten 100 and Asadullah Butt (74 n.o.) set about the Bolsover attack with great gusto to give Cutthorpe a quite magnificent ten wicket win.

Group B

At Goosedale Lane: NOTTS. & ARNOLD AMATEUR 194 for 6; beat MANSFIELD & PLEASLEY 129 all out by 65 runs.

Yet another great game in this terrific competition which has provided some first class cricket throughout. Once again Notts. & Arnold skipper Ian Flood led from the front with a swashbuckling 86 and great support came from Joe Pallister with 43 as they piled up the second highest total in the competition this season 194 for 6.

Jonathan Antcliffe (2 for 24) and Ian Woodall (2 for 21) bowled quite well considering the massive total, but at no time did the target set look under threat.

Despite useful contributions from Andrew Bestwick (29) and Adrian Spray (21) Notts. & Arnold continued their recent run of fine form as Mansfield & Pleasley were bowled out for just 129. Leigh Baldry (3 for 18), Mark North (2 for 18) and David Evans (2 for 21) were the destroyers for Notts. & Arnold who have every chance of making it through to the semis.
