Killamarsh do the double in low scoring encounter
by Paul Barker, 10th September 2006

After taking the league title on Saturday, Killamarsh Juniors completed a spectacular double by adding the Tomlin Trophy with a three wicket win over Mansfield & Pleasley at Central Avenue, Worksop on Sunday.

Runs were at a premium in a low scoring game and the Division 2 side, Mansfield & Pleasley gave a good account of themselves before being beaten in the very last over. Killamarsh won the toss and inserted Mansfield & Pleasley who immediately found the going rather hard and runs were extremely difficult to come by.

Nobody really got going with the Killamarsh attack in miserly mood and the final score of 123 all out took until five balls from the end of the forty overs to complete. Darren Walker (13), Anthony Timpson (17), Ian Woodall (15), Dave Williams (19) and Andrew Bestwick (17) all got started but were then dismissed when looking reasonably well set.

The reason for this was the excellent Killamarsh attack in which Steve Ludlam (1 for 15), Adrian Rivington (3 for 23), Parminder Mudhar (3 for 23) and Pramuka Liyanage (2 for 32) all bowled superbly and very little loose stuff went on offer to the batsmen.

Not that Mansfield & Pleasley were prepared to ‘lay down and die’ and they hit back hard as Killamarsh began their reply. Wickets fell at regular intervals with only David Allen (18) and Steve Ludlam (18) playing any sort of supporting role to Adam Burgess who was the only batsman in either side to bat with any degree of confidence in the entire day.

Burgess was unbeaten on 57 when the winning hit was made as Killamarsh, not without a struggle, made 126 for 7 to lift the trophy. Darren Walker (1 for 12), Ian Woodall (1 for 22), David Williams (1 for 23) and Matt Page (1 for 10) did their utmost to keep the Mansfield & Pleasley hopes alive and can feel extremely proud of their efforts.

Killamarsh will never forget 2006 which has been the most memorable in their history. They have taken both major trophies for the first time in their history and Adrian Rivington and his team must be feeling very pleased of their achievements and rightly so.

League Chairman Jim Garton thanked the Worksop club for staging the match and also thanked Kevin Young of Bassetlaw Trophies for sponsoring the prizes. He then introduced League President Geoff Holden who presented the Tomlins Trophy to Adrian Rivington and also individual prizes to both the winners and the runners up. Man of the match not surprisingly went to Adam Burgess for his match winning effort with the bat for Killamarsh.
