Tea Bags claim unlikely victory to retain Cricket First cup
by Steve Spencer, 22nd December 2006

A great night of indoor cricket started with Clowne bowling out favourites Tea Bags for a very modest 79, a total that free scoring Clowne would not have expected to give them any problems. The Clowne reply got off to a steady start but a mixture of accurate bowling and superb fielding made runs hard to come by. Despite a solid 31 by Matt Lineker when he was run out, his side was still 14 runs short on 65 for 7.

In the second semi good scoring all down the order against the pacey Edwinstowe attack was just enough to take Thoresby Park into three figures to finish on 100 for 6. When Jamie Jevons retired on 20 in only the third over, things looked grim for Park who were without their best two bowlers Remesh Sanja and Paul Hume. To their credit they kept going and when Richard Gombos was dismissed by Mick Day for 23, Edwinstowe were all out an agonising seven runs short with only three balls of the innings left.

Tea Bags won the toss in the final and as usual Tom Ullyott choose to bat first, but as in the semi, his side were pinned down, this time by a Thoresby Park team that play in both the Sunday and Monday leagues. At this form of the game they are a match for anyone. Classy left hander Danny Brown top scored with 25 but again they failed to bat all 14 overs in totalling 92 all out.

Thoresby started well and always looked on course to take the title, and when the final over started only six runs were required. With three wickets in hand, it looked all over for the champions, but up stepped opening bowler Jeff Smith to bowl a superb over and, backed up by his fielders, proceeded to run out the three remaining batsmen for Tea Bags to claim an unlikely victory and retain the Cricket First cup.

Well done Tea Bags and hard lines Thoresby Park on giving us such a good night's cricket.

Could I finish by wishing all players a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Cheers Steve.
