South Nottinghamshire Cricket League - 13th May reports
by Phil Johnson, 14th May 2006

Divisions A to E

Gedling Colliery will fancy themselves for a quick return to the Premier League after strengthening their squad with the acquisition of the impressive Australian Andrew McLean. He took three wickets yesterday to go with a century the previous week, however the star of the show was spinner Steve Burton who followed up his three wicket haul with an unbeaten quick fire 48 as the hosts eased past Radcliffe’s target of 132. Radcliffe need the return of messrs Stewart, Holden and Tunnicliffe to avoid a season of struggle.

It was groundhog day at Ellerslie as overseas star Samrat Sharma (80) was the difference in the home sides five wicket success against Attenborough (161 for 9), just as he had been in the fixture last season. Eastwood bounced back from last weeks hammering at home to Collingham by dishing out one of their own at Bottesford (133), the home grown Stuart Hill (61*) and Neil Gregory (37*) leading the way in an eight wicket victory.

Newstead Village have made a promising start in Division B, following up a win and a tie with a 69 run success at Clifton Seconds, the talented left handed Andy Graham top scored with 81 and skipper Andy Paulson weighed in with five wickets. Southwell are another side who have began well and again it was  Dave Makey (52)and Tim Green (38) who starred with the bat in their 6 wicket success at home to Gotham, earlier Matthew Davis had taken 5 for 51.

Rolls Royce (149 – 5) gained quick revenge for last weeks heavy defeat at home to Bramcote with a five wicket victory in the return fixture thanks to Gordon Pearson’s unbeaten 65. The outstanding Pallav Patel went one better this week with an unbeaten 113 as his Loughborough side (271 – 4) racked up a 17 point winning draw at home to struggling Kimberley (151 – 7) for whom James Griffiths kept up his good start to the season with 75 not out.

In Division C, newcomers Attenborough (165 – 6) lead the way, beating Keyworth by 21 runs, ex Notts Amateur Ian Baddeley top scoring with 75. The form team in the league is undoubtedly Nottingham who have carried on from last season where a terrific late run of results enabled them to escape relegation on the final day. 2006 has seen them win their first two games, the latest a six wicket success at struggling Thrumpton (108) who seem to be badly missing the influential Andy Pick.

Belvoir, who have struggled in recent years have made a fine start, the veteran Tony Wade taking five wickets in their second success of the season at Newark.

Wilsons are the early front runners in Division D and again it was Imran Khan (46) and skipper Steve Maxey (3 for 30) who were influential in the six wicket win at home to Thurgarton (151). Radcliffe Seconds skipper Ian Noblet  (58) was again his sides top scorer in the five wicket win at Old Paviors (164 – 9), however the individual performance of the day came at Long Whatton (301 for 8) where Australian Jamie Allen struck a superb 142 in his sides crushing 162 run victory over Stanton by Dale.

There was a blast from the past at Lady Bay Boots where visiting Hickling 173 for 6 took the honours in a 41 run success. Ex Unity star, Harvey Fenwick, encouraged to come out of retirement and not usually renowned for his bowling antics, was the man of the match with five for 18 for the winners.

In Division E, Wollaton made it three wins out of three, the latest being a seven wicket success at Gedling Seconds (173 for 6) and again it was Luke Budden (73) and Andrew Rattray (60) who performed with the bat. Although it is still early days, Collingham seconds, with a mixture of youth and experience look threatening after a seven wicket win at Risley (84). The leagues best performance however came at Hucknall where visiting Underwood star Chris Briggs followed up his three wickets with  108 with the bat in his sides four wicket win, Briggs has made a superb start to the season as he made 78 and took four wickets last week.

Elsewhere Willoughby are off the mark with a nine wicket win at Stanton and Awsworth (95) and Southwell Seconds (250 for 9) have played two won two following a 21 run success at Calverton Seconds, Nick Nesbitt top scoring with 85 for the winners.
