Stanton sweep away neighbours to a watery grave
by Mark Simmerson, 4th July 2006

Division One leaders Stanton keep up their peak performance by sweeping away near neighbours Ashford on Saturday. R.Price took 5-10 to condemn Ashford to a watery grave - 58 all out. The home team took just eleven overs to win by eight wickets and be in the pub to watch ‘that match’.

in the clash between second and third at Olive Grove Road, SWD smacked 288 (B.Sampson 59, Burley 47). De La Salle wilted in the heat, finishing at 146-9 (Hartley 46, Ghose 4-45). Hundall have slipped past De La Salle, after making 189-9 (Marsh 58, Hughes 41*), they bowled out Hathersage for 141 (C.Pursehouse 5-46, Yardy 4-32). Sheffield Centralians were 129 all out (N.Crapper 5-46), then Neil Pearson’s 46 undefeated took Holmesfield to the win by seven wickets.

Bottom team Millhouses made 129 (S.Hallows 4-28), Calver struggled initially, but were indebted to 42 not out from J.Bonsall for the three wicket win (A.Sarwar 4-45). Stocksbridge hit a useful 226-7 (J.Spawton 72, C.Allen 41), but saw Altaf Junaid in awesome form as he hit 139 not out as Parkhead cruised to a win by five wickets.

With neither of the top two in Division Two playing, Bakewell were able to close the gap a little as they hit 242-7 (E.Reed 93, Luckraft 43, Buchan 4-56) and sent back Grindleford for 123 (R.Peach 4-39, R.Reed 4-68). Baslow made 155 (J.Taylor 40) which Parkhead II reached for the loss of four (Vinall 47). SWD II totalled 197-9, DLS II closing at 143-8 (Bulmer 65, N.Khan 4-47). Dronfield Woodhouse set Chesterfield Barbarians 162-8 (A.Parker 61, J.Nellis 5-65), then M.Latter stroked 111 as Chesterfield Barbarians got home with only four wickets down.

Ridgeway stay in a commanding lead at the top of Division Three, bowling out Hathersage II for 102 (K.Roberts 4-15) and going on to win by eight wickets (McLoughlin 53*). Whittington Wanderers rolled over Stocksbridge II for 83 (M.Wilmott 7-53), Andy Tann hitting 48 not out as Whittington Wanderers won with just two down to move second. Hallam III made 114 (R.Pursehouse 4-32), Hundall passing this with six wickets intact. Sheffield Collegiate V compiled a useful 152-9 before knocking over a depleted Sheffield Transport for 76. Walkley‘s game on Sunday at Millhouses II was washed down the Sheaf in full spate.

Sheepbridge II’s lead in Division Four was eradicated when they were defeated by University Staff II. Staff set 154 (Straw 6-73) and bowled out Sheepbridge II for just 91. Chesterfield Barbarians II were rolled over for 115 (Rupra 4-47), which Sheffield Zingari openers knocked off (Smith 48*, Harris 45*), which takes Zingari wandering back to the top. Baslow II were 122 all out (A.Sadler 47, D.Whiteley 6-18), then P.Fletcher (65*) and C.Julian 45*) saw Whittington Wanderers II home by nine wickets. Stocksbridge III could only muster 74 (Woolley 4-16), but made Coal Aston III work hard before they emerged with maximum points by just two wickets ((Dawson 4-13).

On Sunday saw the Knockout Cup in progress. Fierce but friendly rivals SWD and Sheffield Collegiate met at Abbeydale. Works rattled along in their usual style, reaching 227-4 (Franklin 96, Burley 79) from their 40 overs. Sheffield Collegiate tried hard, but apart from Ellis with 68, found the asking rate too high ended at 156. Whittington Wanderers reached 133, thanks mainly to over 30 extras, Calver easily passing this for the loss of two wickets. Holmesfield smote 254-8 (Ward 64, N.Pearson 56), Stocksbridge falling a hundred short (C.Siddall 66, A.Holmes 4-53).
