Gladwin leads the way in Stanton peak performance
by Mark Simmerson, 15th August 2006

Long time Division One leaders Stanton put in another peak performance last Saturday at Olive Grove Road against SWD. Once more Tony Gladwin lead the way, blazing 119 out of his teams’ 208-7 (R.Khan 4-48). Nick Rosling returned 4-42 at bowl out second placed Works for 157. Victories for Stanton against Hundall and Sheffield Centralians this weekend and defeat for SWD at Stocksbridge will secure Stanton’s first ever title.

In the bottom of the table game at Millhouses, the home side made 178-8 (R.Walch 42) which Sheffield Centralians passed with five down (S.Statham 45*, S.Mumtaz 4-64). Calver made just 130 at Parkhead (A.Junaid 6-27). Parkhead winning by nine wickets (A.Junaid 66*, I.Davis 49*). Calver must win this weekend to keep their hopes of Division One status next term alive. Ashford hit 207-8 (B.Carr 46) and bowled out Stocksbridge for 134 (T.Smith 4-22). Holmesfield totalled 172-8 (R.Turner 60, N.Somerton 5-52). Hathersage were sent back for 140, P.Silcock returning figures of 6-53. Hundall made a useful 186-6 (R.Parker 76*, G.Badcock 41), but De La Salle blazed their way to a seven wicket win (S.White 88*, J.Salvadori 40 - all in fours).

On Sunday Hathersage made 156-8 (R.Stanley 58) at Beauchief, De La Salle racing to 47-0 inside seven overs before rain stopped play. One more win for University Staff will see then return to Division One after their easy victory over Parkhead II. Set only 106 (V.Gopal 41, J.Young 4-10), Staff won by six wickets. Almost certain to join them are Sheffield Collegiate III. They dismissed Chesterfield Barbarians for 124 (P.Sharman 41*, M.Winter 5-43) and then secured maximum points, losing five wickets on the way (G.Griffiths 44*).

Bakewell kept alive their slender hopes of promotion by beating Baslow. Bakewell set a formidable 243-7 (J.Luckraft 65, J.Ferguson 4-78), Baslow reached 161 all out (P.Fearn 7-60). Sheffield Centralians II are already relegated and conceded 272-6 (D.Hullett 68*, D.Atkin 45) at home to Sheepbridge. Cents managed only 77 in reply. Dronfield Woodhouse crawled to 116-7 which De La Salle II passed with five wickets down, which almost certainly relegates Dronfield Woodhouse. Grindleford made 168 (T.Skelton 62, T.Outram 48, N.Khan 4-32) and SWD II got there with four wickets in hand (T.Ali 60).

Division Three is still wide open, although Ridgeway still head the table after a good win at home to Whittington Wanderers. Chasing 204-8 (A.Tann 89, M.Pashley 43, G.Woodhead 4-59), Ridgeway, with N.Byers hitting 67, were winners by five wickets. Already relegated Stocksbridge II were rolled over by Hundall II for 73 (J.Allender 5-34), then S.Bayston smacked 64* in a ten wicket win, moving Hundall II up to second place. Sheffield Transport hit 228 with A.Kadir smashing 123 (L.Woolway 5-68). Hathersage II crumpled to 129 all out (P.Cotterill 5-46).

Walkley made 156 (G.Hudson 44, J.Hudson 40, C.Thompson 5-14) and must have feared the worst when Hallam III reached 152-7. Then T.Firth (4-44) bowled Neil Wastnidge for 69 and another wicket fell on the same score. Hallam III went into the last over with nine down and the scores level. The last wicket fell on the second ball and the game was tied. Earlier in the innings W.Shore had taken a hat-trick.

Whittington Wanderers II are top of Division Four and will be promoted if they win this Saturday. They bowled out Sheffield Zingari for 152 (D.Whiteley 4-36) and won by three wickets (P.Fletcher 87*, A.Soni 4-19). Sheepbridge II are second after a strengthened batting line up hammered Stocksbridge III for 310-8 (G.Whitehead 101, G.Bramwell 98). M.Straw took 4-27 as Stocksbridge III closed at 123-9. Dronfield Sports II opener Dave Turner walloped 150 - the best individual innings of the season - out of 288 (S.Topliss 44, A.Vasanthan 6-99). In reply University Staff II made 148 all out (Z.Ahmed 59). Coal Aston III scored 158 and Chesterfield Barbarians II crept to a win by two wickets.
