Stanton open up big lead
by Mark Simmerson, 17th July 2006

Stanton have opened up a lead of over forty points from SWD in Division One, although Works do have a game in hand. Last weekend, Stanton smote 247-8 with Nick Rosling hitting 101 (R.Price 51, D.Hadfield 42). Hathersage subsided to 94 all out (Stanworth 40, R.Price 5-8). Stocksbridge were visited by De La Salle - who just three weeks ago were third. DLS made 198-9 (S.Wainwright 73), but a patient 51 from A. Siddall and aggressive 44 from D. Codd took the home team to a win by four wickets and some breathing space above the bottom three.

Hundall consolidate third place after making 224-4 (M.Dawson 53, R.Parker 51, G.Badcock 45) and dismissing struggling Calver for 163 (D.Howie 52, C.Pursehouse 4-50). Ashford hit a useful 218-8 at Holmesfield (T.Smith 62, A.Holmes 42), but the home team matched this exactly to end at nine down for the same score (R.Turner 51, N.Pearson 51, D.Ward 42). Parkhead made 176-9 on an awkward pitch at Millhouses (T.Brown 71). The spin of Altaf Junaid (5-36) curtailing Millhouses innings at 152.

Sheffield Collegiate III’s promotion charge from Division Two suffered a setback at Bakewell. Chasing the 163-9 set them, despite 52 from Geoff Layer, they stuttered to 152 all out with Roy Peach taking 6-47. Dronfield Woodhouse made 158-7 (S.Vessey 40), which University Staff sauntered past with four down, the prolific Paul Kerry making 62 and J.Nicholl 53. The top two - University Staff and Sheffield Collegiate III play at Abbeydale on Saturday, and with third placed Bakewell visited by struggling DLS II, Bakewell could find themselves moving second.

Chesterfield Barbarians made 107 (S.Cookham 4-1), which Grindleford obtained with three wickets down. Baslow were 179 all out (Ferguson 45, Kirk 44, P.Lally 4-49), too many for DLS II - all out for 119 (T.Taylor 4-34, Hadfield 4-55). Sheepbridge scored 162-9 (B.Chambers 45, D.Atkin 43*), Parkhead II going on to win by five wickets. At Olive Grove Road SWD II ran up 156 (J.Summerhill 58, M.Walker 6-46) before N.Khan took 4-35 to knock over bottom team Sheffield Centralians II for 117.

Ridgeway march on at the head of Division Three, making light of chasing the 163-9 set by Stocksbridge II (N.Perry 56), winning by seven wickets. Walkley continue to chase them down - at does look that these clubs are already promotion shoe-ins - Hundall II made just 108-8 (P.Gibson 45*), Walkley losing four wickets in a successful run chase. Old hand Andy Leiper enjoyed a fine individual day for Sheffield Collegiate V against Hallam III. Firstly he made 73 from 179-7 and then took 4-54 in support of Collins’ 5-54. However, Hallam III scrambled to a one wicket win.

John Slack smote 104 out of Sheffield Transport’s 182 (J.Needham 4-37). Then Phil Cotterill provided a transport of delight, returning 7-42 to roll over Whittington Wanderers for 102 (M.Pashley 49). Millhouses II mustered just 101 (L.Woolway 4-19), Hathersage II going to a win with five wickets in hand. Leaders in Division Four - Sheepbridge II - made 178 before flicking aside Chesterfield Barbarians II for a mere 52 (M.Straw 6-17). Bottom club Coal Aston III totalled 131-8 (S.Shah 46, D.Turner 5-29), Fletcher’s 58 taking second placed Whittington Wanderers II to victory by six wickets.

Sheffield Zingari stay in attendance in third, compiling 196-8 (M.Sayer 71, R.Bopra 40, R.Beresford 5-85), Baslow II were 151 all out (T.Sadler 41, A.Soni 5-30). Dronfield Sports II made 171 (S.Firth 45, M.Wingfield 5-74), Stocksbridge III were sent back for 129 (T.Rolfe 40, B.Croft 4-15).
