Shireoaks put up brave fight but Springboks lift the trophy Underdogs Shireoaks were soon in trouble as they lost a wicket in each of the first two overs With Sri Lankan KC back for Killamarsh and bowling over number three, things looked bad for the Wednesday League champions. Liam Summers stopped the rot for a time with 20 and captain Richard Watts top scored with 28, but their final total of 84 all out was a disappointing one for the leagues top scorers. Eight off the first four balls gave the impression that the run chase would be a cakewalk for the strong Killamarsh batting line up, but when KC went to a great catch off the fifth ball the game changed completely. A superb bowling and fielding performance from the young side prevented any batsman reaching 20, and when the last wicket fell on 60 Shireoaks had completed an unlikely victory by 24 runs. In the second semi Springboks won the toss and chose to bat, and good scores all down the order with 34 from Steve Bentley, 26 from Richard Stroh and 24 from veteran Cliff Adwick led to a very useful 126 for 5 total. Dave Beard led the Kiveton reply well with 26 and captain Matt Cartwright scored 21, but runs were hard to come by and it was Springboks that progressed into the final as Kiveton were bowled out in the 12th over for 81 to lose by 45 runs. Shireoaks started the final as they had finished the semi, on top of their game. Only a late stand by Elliott Hind, 45 not out, and Neil Bentley, 24 not out, saved the day and moved the Boks score on to a defendable 117 for 5 total. Oaks number two Liam Seeley put his side in with a chance with a good 37 but as the game ebbed and flowed it was left to Liam Summers with 30 to take it to the wire. With two overs left, the game was on a knife edge with 16 wanted and one wicket to fall. Up stepped Boks captain Will Butler who bowled Summers off the first ball of the penultimate over, to give Springboks the Cricket First Cup for the third time in three attempts.
Well done Shireoaks for putting up such a good fight and congratulations to Will Butler's team who were presented with the cup by 'the follow on' webmaster Alan Rowley. Have a great outdoor season and see you all for the autumn indoor season - cheers Steve.
