Turner destroys Hathersage single-handed
by Tom Hilton, 15th July 2007

Performance of the week was no doubt in Division 3 of the Surridge Sport Yorkshire and Derbyshire League where Dronfield Woodhouse’s Simon Turner needed no help in dismissing Hathersage II for a miniscule 39. His figures of 10-17 showing a superb performance with 8 bowled and 2 caught and bowled, he single-handedly destroyed Hathersage’s batting line up. This was after Woodhouse had closed their innings on 158 with 57 of them coming from the bat of Drew.

Sheepbridge must’ve thought Whittington Wanderers II’s total of 70-8, which included 4-22 from Bramwell, was a very gettable total, however 5-23 from Whitely saw to it that Sheepbridge were bowled out just 3 runs shy of victory. 6 wickets for Gull and 4 for Owens kept Collegiate V to 128 despite 54 from Palekan. Those bowling performances look crucial now as Transport squeezed home with 8 wickets down.

In a low scoring game Hallam III’s 99 was just enough to beat Millhouses II as they could only manage 94 and Duckmanton Lodge defeated Hundall as they produced 147-4 which Hundall couldn’t match as they closed on 121-7.

Stocksbridge gave their chances of survival a boost this weekend as they beat University Staff by 7 runs. Batting first they produced 166-7. Staff falling just short with 9 wickets down. De La Salle added to the plight of Collegiate as they removed them for 56 with Howard grabbing 6-27. this was in response to De La Salle’s first innings total of 163 which included 46 from Latimer and 5-33 from Seal.

6-46 from Khan helped to reduce Ashford to a modest 144. SWD however made hard work of the run chase losing 7 wickets, 5 of those were taken by AJ Finney for 55 but 54 from Everitt went a long way to securing victory for his side and continuing SWD’s fine season.

In Division 2, table toppers Parkhead were aided to their total of 185 by Gillott’s 50. SWD II in response were caught short as they were bowled out for 125. De La Salle came closest to breaking the 200 mark as they closed on 192-9 against Ridgeway. 42 from Simmerson and 71 from Bulmer doing then damage with the bat in the first innings a prelude for Green’s superb performance of 8-40 as Ridgeway managed just 99.

Grindleford’s win this weekend still keeps them in touch with the top two. They reduced Chesterfield Barbarians to 130 with S Buchan’s 4-42 the highlight. Then 42 from Brown helped Grindleford to a 5 wicket win.

Three games went ahead in Division 4 also with the most unusual coming at Ashford. Normally 86 isn’t enough to win you the match but it proved to be a winning total for the home side as 7-19 in the second innings from Wilson saw Ashford bowl out University Staff II and win by 48 runs.

McNeil’s 6-18 played a big role for Stocksbridge II as they had Chesterfield Barbarians II back in the hutch for 60. Stocksbridge reached their total in routine fashion losing just 3 wickets, and Duckmanton Lodge also struggled to the same total of 60 against Zingari who also eased home by 8 wickets.

This weekend has left all the league’s batsmen wishing for a drought and a return to hard batting pitches and quickly!
