SWD edged out by Hundall as they concede second place
by Tommy Hilton, 31st August 2008

With the championship and the relegation places already decided, the main game in Division 1 saw Hundall edge out SWD by 11 runs. Dawson’s 53 set Hundall on their way to a target of 199-7. Ghose took all 7 wickets conceding 75 runs in the process. Despite 80* from Everitt, Works fell short and as such conceded second place to their opponents.

Parkhead saw off Calver in a fairly one sided encounter. They posted 207 with Brown the pick of the batsmen scoring 43. The ever reliable Coxhead claimed figures of 5-55 but his performance was overshadowed by that of Spielman whose 6-22 tore through Calvers’s batsmen who were shot out for just 73.

79 not out from Nick Rosling helped Stanton to a 4 wicket win against University Staff having been set 122 to win. Holmesfield made light work of Ashford. Their innings closed on 210-7 with Howard scoring 60 and Pearson 53. Pearson then took 4-32 with the ball as Ashford crumbled to 73 all out.

Collegiate’s winless run was extended by De La Salle in a close encounter. Collegiate managed 145-8 from their 46 overs with Langdale top scoring on 80 and Willey the pick of the bowlers taking 4-36. De La Salle made hard work of chasing down the relatively modest total losing 7 wickets but eventually scraping home.

Youlgreave Lodge did nothing to help their survival chances against already promoted Ridgeway. Batting first Lodge were bowled out for 140 with Wooley taking 5-50. an unbeaten 78 from Cartwright saw ridgway home with 7 wickets still in tact.

Grindleford’s Oli Brown has had a quiet season for his standards but he made a significant contribution of 60 backed up well by Ford’s 40 to take his side to 168-5. 7-72 then from Bingley bowled out Millhouses just 7 short of victory.

Sheepbridge stay well and truly in the relegation mire with one game to play after Hathersage bowled them out for 81 and then knocked them off for the loss of just two with Baggaley seeing Hathersage over the line with an unbeaten 48.

Chesterfield Barbarians are already relegated but put on a good show against Parkhead II. Barbs total of 214-7 which featured a magnificent 116* from J Wall would win most matches but Parkhead won by 2 wickets, Bamford’s 64 was the highlight of their innings. 4-20 from Tompkins reduced Stocksbridge to 104, of those runs 58 were claimed by Siddall but Centralians completed a decent 5 wicket victory.

With Millhouses and Baslow already promoted the focus in Division 3 was on the bottom. De La Salle met SWD in a crucial 50 pointer. De La Salle’s 144-7 which featured scores of 52 from Bulmer and 47 from Simmerson was never going to be enough. The controversial Peter Holmes set the ball rolling for Works taking an impressive 6-68. That allowed Mallett (61*) and Summerhill (43*) to finish the job with 8 wickets to spare and leapfrog De La Salle to move out of the relegation places.

Millhouses and Baslow both recorded comfortable victories. Millhouses chased down the 118 Hallam III had set them with 5 wickets in hand and Baslow chased down Walkley’s total of 127 with 6 wickets to spare. WPH’s 186-8 was too many for Collegiate V who closed on 149-6 in reply and Transport skittled Bakewell for just 98 and went on to win by 6 wickets.

The Division 4 title is Whittington Wanderers’ to lose after they recorded a comfortable win against relegated Coal Aston. Wanderers batted first and thanks to 82 from Fletcher they set 182-6 before Needham’s 4-29 helped to bowl out Coal Aston for just 102.

Dronfield Woodhouse kept their title aspirations alive with a comprehensive win against Sheepbridge II. The Sheepbridge batsmen were rounded up for just 25 allowing Woodhouse to cruise to a 10 wicket win. 43 from Morton and 40 from Parry set Hathersage on their way to 184 against Whittington Wanderers II. Bell retained tidy figures for Wanderers on 4-18 but that was as good as it got for them as 5-21 from Sykes and 4-38 from Somerton removed them for 84.

Centralians II were bowled out for a below par 79 and Despite 4-30 from Emberlain they couldn’t avoid defeat losing to Stocksbridge II by 3 wickets. 47 from Warnes steered Hundall II to a straightforward 6 wicket win chasing down Zingari’s 143

Ashford II turned out another trademark performance. This week Baslow were on the receiving end of their bowling attack. Wilson took 4-24 and McGrath 4-4 as Baslow collapsed to 45 all out allowing Ashford to win by 7 wickets.

The second promotion spot is still up for grabs with Apperknowle and University Staff II fighting it out. Apperknowle declared their innings on 210-6 but couldn’t bowl out Zingari II. They took 7 wickets as Zingari closed on 161. Staff set 191-8, 41 of those scored by Nichol from their 46 overs for WPH II who were then bowled out for 88.

Croft (59), Marsh (62) and Buckle (61) were the key batsmen in Dronfield SC’s 264 against Wingerworth Saltergate who could only manage 106 in reply. Holden took 5-23 for Dronfield. Slack made 48 for Youlgreave Lodge II as they set 126-7 for Stocksbridge III to chase. They managed it in style without losing a wicket, Kenny was the hero with an unbeaten 80. 7-16 from Dart helped Chesterfield Barbarians bowl out Hallam IV for just 55 and win by 6 wickets.
