Hilton blitz smashes scoring record
by Toby Lock, 1st June 2008

The league scoring record for an amateur player changed hands on Saturday as Hundall ran into a blitz from Calver opener Tom Hilton who blazed 13 fours and 19 sixes in a staggering 190 out of the home side's 265 all out. Hundall were up against it from the start of the reply and despite 56 from Pursehouse Mundy's 4-49 secured victory by 102 runs which lifts Calver off the bottom.

Parkhead remain at the top despite a four wicket defeat by Holmesfield. Rossington's unbeaten 86 saw the visitors past Parkhead's 199-9 of which the highlight was 56 by Junaid. University Staff took closer order with a victory over Collegiate. Kerry made 107 not out for Staff as Khan took 4-30. Collegiate in reply finished on 120-9. Stanton made a welcome return to form with full points against Ashford who tumbled to 82 all out (D.Rosling 4-35) in response to Stanton's 130-7.

Also moving in the right direction are Sheffield Works who won a tight match at De La Salle. Works struggled to 117-7 and then dismissed their hosts for 109. Stars of the match with the ball were Willey for DLS with 4-55 and Brad Sampson for Works with 4-48 as all batsmen found the going tough.

Parkhead are also out in front in Division Two despite a defeat for their second string at Sheepbridge. Rodgers took the honours for Sheepbridge with 50 and Flint's 4-13 helped bundle Parkhead out for 112. Ridgeway could not take advantage of this slip as Stocksbridge hustled them out for a mere 77 with Siddall the main threat taking 4-37. Stocksbridge cruised home with only two wickets lost.

Centralians also enjoyed an emphatic win. Having bowled out their hosts for 97 at Millhouses they strolled home by 9 wickets. Top performers for Cents were Walker 4-28 and Marshall 72 not out. There was a closer game at Youlgrave where visitors Chesterfield Barbarians posted a challenging 209-8. The home side's brave effort fell short at 185-7.

Millhouses continue to dominate Division Three and strengthened their position by crushing Bakewell. Afraz Khan made 43 defying Peach who took 6-52 as Millhouses ran up 173-9. Bakewell were soon in trouble and the procession of disappointed batsmen ended at 56 all out with Mohammad Alyas taking 4-15.

The tide is turning at Baslow who made very short work of De La Salle. John Hadfield destroyed DLS with 6-18 and Baslow's openers knocked off the 40 runs required without alarm. Sheffield Works scraped a victory over Weston Park Hospital. Birtles performed surgery with 4-20 as WPH made only 104 and Das with 4-35 administered a similar dose as Works prevailed with the last pair at the crease.

74 from Hudson was the mainstay of Walkley's total of 157. Frith with 4-52 made sure Hallam fell short on 137 all out. Transport batsmen were in top gear as they amassed the best of the day 267-7 with Slack and Barber both making fifties. This was all too much for Collegiate who subsided for 105.

Whittington Wanderers lead Division Four by a massive 45 points. Needham with 7-22 helped reduce Stocksbridge to 112 and in reply Tann was in a hurry to complete an eight wicket win with an unbeaten 68. The whole of the division now separates them from their seconds who perished for 77 at Dronfield Woodhouse as Bridgett snared 4-15. Dronfield lost only three wickets knocking off the runs.

Zingari took first knock at home to Hathersage who restricted them to 145-7 then eased home by five wickets. Eberlin with 5-16 did the damage as Centralians bowled out Sheepbridge for 91. Cents then took maximum points with an eight wicket triumph.

Batsmen flourished at Hundall. Bayston with 41 and Gibson 40 gave Coal Aston food for thought at tea in a total of 209-8. The visitors reply closed on 150-3 with Eke undefeated on 67. Baslow's Booker ensured his side maintain top spot in Division Five. His 4-13 helped rush Stocksbridge out for 37 and set up a nine wicket win.

Zingari were also tumbled out quickly for only 54 by Ashford for whom Wilson was almost unplayable with 8-27. Ashford led by 40 from McGrath won without losing a wicket. Hadley snapped up 5-30 as University Staff sent Weston Park Hospital back for 106. Steady batting from Staff saw them home with six wickets to spare.

Elsewhere it was a good day for batsmen. Firth with 71 and Croft 40 lifted Dronfield Sports to 250-5 which was far too much for Chesterfield Barbarians as Ghani took 6-35 to reduce them to 130 all out. Runs too for Hallam. The happy batsmen were Bliss unbeaten on 84 and Lobo with 75 in a total of 239-7. Wingerworth Saltergate never got to grips with the target and could only muster 111. Hassan was the highlight with 4 -11.

Newcomers Apperknowle continue to impress and stay in second place with a comfortable home win over Youlgrave Lodge. Parker's 41 and Barfoot's 4-41 decorated the home side's 214-9. Lodge made a spirited reply thanks to 95 from Booker but Parkin's 6-40 did the business to limit the visitors to 175-8.
