Blidworth shock Edwinstowe
by Paul Barker, 17th July 2005

Tomlin Trophy – Quarter Final

IN a weekend where results defied normality things carried on the same way on Sunday as top of Division 1 side Edwinstowe slumped to a five wicket win against their Division 2 counterparts Blidworth. Edwinstowe got away to a reasonable enough start with Paul Benson making 49 and Garth Brown 34, but sadly from their point of view that was where it all ended.

Andy Watson helped himself to 3 for 15 and skipper Dave Wood took 4 for 17 as Edwinstowe simply tumbled to 153 all out in rather ignominious fashion. One could not have seen this coming and Blidworth must have felt extremely proud of their work up to the half way stage.

They had even more to celebrate as Dave Willcock who once he has settled in will give any side trouble began to open up and with some searing shots helped himself to a magnificent 71 runs. The winning hit was in the grand manner with a big six as Blidworth reached 159 for 5 with comparative ease to go through to the semi-finals.

Even though he was still in the fine form he has shown all season, Richard Gombos who bagged an impressive 4 for 20 could do no more and with the overs restricted in cup matches he could only stand and stare as Blidworth roared to a great victory.

At Forest Corner: EDWINSTOWE 153 all out (Paul Benson 49, Garth Brown 34, Andy Watson 3 for 15, Dave Wood 4 for 17) lost to BLIDWORTH 159 for 5 (Dave Willcock 71, Richard Gombos 4 for 20) by five wickets.
