Unbeaten Springboks retain play-off title
by Steve Spencer, 22nd December 2005

The play-off semi finals saw Springboks score a massive 164 for 6, a total that was always out of Rowthorne Lane Silveres' reach and the final margin of victory was an impressive 88 runs. The other semi was an interesting affair with Mansfield & Pleasley coming up against the Barmy Army a team made up of Mansfield & Pleasley juniors. Playing out of their skins, the youngsters managed to get the better of their elders with a 40 run win.

On paper the final looked a complete mismatch but in fact turned out to be classic with Barmy Army winning the toss and batting first. Aggressive batting and good running soon had the Springboks under pressure and, with the first three batsmen retiring at the halfway stage, the score was 68 for 1. It was always going to be hard for the incoming batsmen to keep up the pressure against the accurate Boks attack. The innings tailed with top scorer Matt Page (40) last man out with the score on 110 with, crucially, an over short of the 14 to be bowled.

The Springboks got off to a flyer and looked to be coasting to victory before a spirited fight back got the youngsters to within two wickets of an unlikely win. All credit goes to Will Butler and his unbeaten Springboks side on retaining their play-off title and being the inaugural winners of the Cricket First cup.

In the knockout cup quarter finals, there were easy wins for The Mafia and Tea Bags, and Clowne are the only Sunday side left in the competition after putting out MGT by 64 runs. The game of the night was the all Thursday league meeting of Barmy Army and Tricky Trees, with Trees' Dave Bacon scoring three off the last ball of the game to reach Army’s useful 126 for 6 total.
