Tommy's Tea Bags worthy cup winners
by Steve Spencer, 21st April 2006

Low scores were the order of the day on the last Sunday of the season. Any chance Woodsetts had of making the play-offs slipped away as they failed t o make the 90 runs required to beat champions Thoresby Park. Cuckney Cowboys completed a successful season beating MGT by a hefty 59 runs and can consider themselves unlucky that in the very first game of the season they played ex champions Mansfield & Pleasley, before they were replaced by the young Edwinstowe that ended the season bottom of the table.

Pilsley beat Bawtry to climb over local rivals MGT for the first time this season, and Clowne confirmed third place with a six wicket defeat of Edwinstowe.

On Monday, Tea Bags, strengthened by South Africans Richard Stroh and Will Butler, beat champions Rowthorne Lane Silveres, and Edwinstowe's defeat of Stevos Rockets gave them the third play-off spot due to The Mafia being unable to make it owing to other commitments.

Clumber Park finished on a high beating bottom team Whitwell, who have blooded several youngsters this season and will undoubtedly see the benefit in the future.

Play-off quarter final results

Barmy Army (104/3) beat Edwinstowe (102/5)
Tea Bags (143/5) beat Thoresby Park (81/7)
Cuckney Cowboys (95/6) beat Langold (91/6)
Rowthorne Lane Silveres (114/6) beat Clowne (91/7)

The quarter finals produced some very close encounters. The young Barmy Army and Edwinstowe sides were well matched and it was Barmy Army who came out on top, reaching the target with an over to spare. It’s worth noting that the seven batsmen to reach over 20 and retire in the match were all junior players.

Langold needed six to win off the last ball against Cowboys, and a great effort saw the ball hit the side wall only feet short of the target. Tea Bags beat Sunday league champions Thoresby Park, with South African Richard Stroh top scoring with 47 not out, in a mammoth 143 for 5 total. Clowne pushed Rowthorne Lane Silveres hard before falling 23 runs short of the 115 needed for victory.

 Play-offs semi finals results

Tea Bags (136/4) beat Cuckney Cowboys (48/7)
Rowthorne Lane Silveres (86/7) beat Barmy Army (75/7)

Play-offs final

Tea Bags (99/7) beat Rowthorne Lane Silveres (79/7)

Cowboys proved no match for rampant Tea Bags who eased into the final by a massive 88 run margin. After bowling out Rowthorne Lane Silveres for a modest 86 runs, Jon Antcliff 3 for 14, Barmy Army appeared to be coasting to victory on 60 for 2, before a fight back led by the superb bowling of Ramesh Sanjay 3 for 12, and despite 30 by Thomas Antcliff, and 21 by Kieran Evans, the rest of the batting crumbled to 75 all out.

The two league matches between Tea Bags and Rowthorne Lane Silveres had yielded one win each and batting first, Tea Bags 99 all out total looked well within the reach of a strong Rowthorne Lane Silveres lineup. With great fielding and tight bowling by all the Tea Bags side, the pick of being Danny Brown with 3 overs for only 10 runs, Rowthorne Lane Silveres ran out of wickets with one over left and 20 runs short of the victory target.

Well done Tommy Tea Bag and his boys - worthy winners of the Cricket First play off cup for the Spring 2006 season.
